5.0 out of 5 stars I actually learned something useful and new!
At 48, it's hard to show me something new. At 48, it's hard to show me something new. I grew up in the big hairdo Deep South, with fine, thin, limp, yet frizzy, neither quite straight nor wavy, hair.I lived through Farrah Fawcett feathers and bad eighties perms. I am a long time beauty magazine junkie. I have had my hair cut and styled in fancy salons in Buckhead in Atlanta, Kings Road in London, Oak Street in Chicago and Newberry Street in Boston, among many others, and Nick actually told me things no one else has! Buy this book for the instructions on how to do a wrap blow dry -- which I'd never even heard of-- if nothing else. I styled my hair salon perfectly in two minutes today! It's drizzling and humid, and no frizz yet, either. He tells you how to avoid the ghastly amateur stylist bubble head / bubble bangs look. The cuts are practical, modern and likely to flatter anyone, and the advice accessible. He explains styling products and doesn't push his line at all. A few quibbles: I didn't understand the French twist instructions, and there are the usual full page photos just to pad out the text, but this is a surprisingly useful book! It has tons of useful tips I have never read anywhere else--the inside scoop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, October 3, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
You can read this book in a day. It is excellent and it is an excellent resource to keep around. The several times in my life that I've had mid-length hair, it was always a problem style. Now my thoughts are confirmed. Nick explains the most important thing that should determine your hair cut is your hair's texture and shape. The book covers everything about hair: how to determine what type hair you have, what products to use for each hair type and how to use the product, tools and brushes, how to blow out your hair for various looks, how to shop for a good hairdresser, color, ethic hair, problem hair, and so much more. I think of this book as a good investment. Perhaps this book will raise the bar for hairdressers - with the information in this book, we can be more selective in who cuts our hair, thus expecting more from hairdressers. If you have to spend the money, why not expect a hairdresser to also be an adviser, suggesting hair cuts based on the best cuts for your hair type.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth buying, December 17, 2008
By
"Great Hair" is a good book and overall, I am happy with my purchase. His style of writing is very easy to read and enjoyable and he also includes some really great hair tips such as "how to wash hair," "the perfect blowout" and "how to identify your hair-type to choose your perfect style." The book is also a great in helping you to be able to get the most out of your trip to the stylist. I would recommend it to a friend. The reason why I only gave it 4 stars is because the up-dos were only so-so and I didn't get much out of the pictures that were included.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be on every woman's bookshelf, November 30, 2008
The information in Great Hair is presented in an easy-to-understand and accessible fashion. It's rare and so refreshing to find a beauty book that isn't written simply to promote a product line...there were no references in the book to specific brands at all, only product types. I love the instructions and his philosophy. This book will help you to get to know your hair and then to choose techniques, products and styles to work with it, not against it. As another reviewer stated, you could spend your money on this book and the wraparound blow-dry instructions alone would make it worth it. The hair style photos were wonderful as well. I hope to see more books by Nick.

I'm a fan of Nick's from "What Not to Wear," & was excited to see he had a book out. And it is excellent! Very comprehensive, answers any & all questions you may ever have had about your hair. It's more of a reference book, not something you'd sit down & read chapter after chapter. Still, it's already helped me immensely. There are so many tips in this book that I believe I'll be referencing it for years to come. Thank you Nick for taking the time & trouble to write such a detailed tome on haircare! A copy of this book should be in every household!

1.0 out of 5 stars General information that all females who are 15 years of age or older already know, July 25, 2009
It contains general information that all females who are 15 years of age or older already know. You can learn this information from your friends, your mothers and the Internet.

For example, in chapter 5 "Styling at Home" from page 91 to 125, the author shows the readers how to use hair products. He says holding spray is used for finishing hair of all types. To use it, hold it 6-8 inches from your head and spray directly onto hair.
He also shows you how to blow dry your hair.
From page 121 to 122, he shows you how to do French twist with 2 drawings. If you don't know how to do it in advance, you'll certainly won't able to do it after reading this book.

It's a waste of money. "Great Hair" by David Boston and "Good to Great Hair" by Robert Vetica are more useful and easy to learn.

It's such a complete piece of book. Anything you want to know about taking care of your hair and how to get a great style is right here. The only thing I wish for is that the part about showering and washing and drying your hair was in bullet form like many of the other instructions were. I find I go back to that section often to make sure im doing it right. He's very specific!
