This review is from: T. Rex - Greatest Hits 1972-77-B Sides (Audio CD)
The B side was traditionally a place to experiment: people bought the record because they wanted the A side, so something good on the B side was a bonus - nobody heard the B side till they'd handed over their money, so from the artist's point of view here was a way of trying out new ideas with little risk. Marc Bolan understood this and used it to great effect.Probably the weakest tracks here are the tracks that were culled from albums, although as a general rule Marc gave value for money. He didn't often use album tracks as B sides. A number of the earlier tracks on this album were themselves originally considered as A sides. For example, Thunderwing was a contender to be the first single on the T Rex lable... Other greatest hits that never were on this collection include Jitterbug Love, Groove a Little and my favourite version of Dock of the Bay. This is an essential record for T Rex fans and a fascinating eye-opener for the casual listener. |
