Beautiful patterns, however....,

This review is from: Great Knitted Gifts (Hardcover)
At first glance this book is wonderful- beautiful patterns- clear instuctions. I was excited about using up scraps for some of the patterns. All projects use handspun yarn- wonderful since I am a spinner. BEWARE!!! There are NO yardage requirements for any of the projects period! No weights of finished projects or anything other than your best guess! This is very frustrating for the sweaters (multiple sizes)- who wants to guess, spend all the time knitting then run out of yarn?? Yardage requirements are really a must- as professional designers they should know better. This is definitely NOT a beginner book for this reason- book description is VERY misleading.

Great book - for intarsia,

Only buy this book if you are interested in knitting complicated intarsia charts with no row numbers. Some of the projects are attractive, but you will need to buy about eighteen different colors of yarn for them.

Nice but what about the yarn?,

This book has some beautifull knits in it, and I don't think it's too complicated for the average knitter. However, the yarn they use for all the projects is some specially made yarn just for them? I think? Because I can't find it to order it anywhere, and they don't really give any equivalents other than the weight (worsted, DK, etc.) The colors they use are so beautifull that it would have been nice to be able to match them exactly.

Yarn Requirements,
By Cupcakem (Oregon) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Great Knitted Gifts (Hardcover)
The yarn requirements are in the very back of the book and are listed in ounces with the standard of 70 yards/ounce. Not terribly easy for beginners. Also most of the patterns are made with very few or only one size.

I first saw this book at the Library. I enjoyed it so much that I kept checking it out. When I saw it on Amazon.com I figured I'd better get my own copy, and let someone else enjoy the Libraries copy.
The patterns are different and therefore make unexpected gifts. I have made up several as gifts and they all where well received. I like the fact that the authors encourage you to expand your ideas and go for change. I know this book will bring me many years of pleasurable knitting ideas.

I got this book from the library and absolutely had to have it for myself! It's a great book for two reasons, it can be used for handspun yarn and it has a nice variety of knitted items with a variety of knitting skills. Wonderfully inspirational book.

This is one of my favorite books! I love every pattern in it. I have made three of the items with plans to do more. I highly recommend it.

Great patterns,
This review is from: Great Knitted Gifts (Hardcover)
This book features some great patterns. I purchased it mainly for the scarf patterns. The only drawback is not being able to match some of the colors that are used for the completed projects in the book. These were made with "handspun" yarns, so you need to find similar colors to make the projects if you want them to come out the same. These are great gift ideas, though.

More hand-holding needed...,

I agree with the other ladies....a bit frustrated by this book as I consider myself an intermediate knitter but I still need to know quantities when it comes to buying yarn for a project and numbers on the graphs are a simple thing for the authors to include, one less step for us knitters. This book was a gift, and I am returning it, just not enough inspirational ideas for me. Gonna try something called Holiday Knits.

I own two of their hand knit sweaters; one that I purchased from a boutique in New York and another from their little store in Arcata California. While in San Francisco on business I decided to make the trip north to peek at more of their goodies. It was well worth the drive. I cant wait to tackle some of the projects in this beautiful book. It makes me want to be a better knitter. I know what Im giving for gifts next Christmas....
