Decent Compilation .... But Nothing Eye-Catching,
By AvidOldiesCollector (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Great Ladies of Rock & Roll: The 60's (Audio CD)
Unlike their volume covering the 1950's which included a couple of genuine hard-to-find hits by The Bonnie Sisters and The Hearts, along with several non-hit cuts that would appeal to collectors of the "girl group" sound (The Co-Eds, Deltairs, and Clickettes), this one seems to have set out to "play it safe."In other words, a quick scan of the contents tells the informed collector that everything here is simply a gathering together of 1960's hits that have appeared on countless other compilations, many with more detailed liner notes (two pages in this one with brief artist-by-artist notes). There's nothing glaringly wrong with this album (the sound quality is excellent) - but then again, nothing jumps out at you. It's all just more of the same. Why didn't they follow the pattern of the first volume and throw in some tunes that would grab the attention of both the casual fan AND the collector of hits? Maybe a Damita Jo hit like If You Go Away (# 68 Billboard Pop Hot 100 in late 1968/early 1969), or something from Etta James such as Trust In Me (# 4 R&B/# 30 Hot 100 in 1961) and The Soul Sisters and their 1964 hit I Can't Stand It (# 46 Hot 100 and which likely have been much higher on the R&B charts had Billboard not suspended those charts for all of 1964). |
