Great book; easy to read. Very sad information, but very detailed. My book was actually signed by the author which is cool. :)

Wayne Louis Kadar has made a name for himself penning books, most dealing with Great Lakes shipping losses. With GREAT LAKES DISASTERS, he broadens his focus, describing a multitude of disasters that have occurred in the Great Lakes area including storms, floods, collapses, fires, explosions and sinkings.

Kadar details 25 disasters that took place in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and the province of Ontario
between 1860 and 1985. In no particular order, he describes such events as the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, the Great Storm of 1913, the October 1944 Cleveland East Ohio Gas Company explosion and fire, the loss of the Lady Elgin, the series of forest fires in 1871, the 1925 Tri-State Tornado, the Great Ohio Flood of 1913, the 1979 crash of Flight 191, the Cherry Mine Fire, the 1918 Hammond Circus Train disaster, etc.

The book benefits from Kadar's extensive research. He does a workmanlike job of describing the above catastrophes though he has a liking for run-on sentences. I would have preferred a strictly chronological arrangement but that's just me.

The accounts are illustrated with vintage photographs, newspaper headlines, maps and diagrams.

If you're interested in a Great Lakes 'Magical Misery Tour,' GREAT LAKES DISASTERS will fill the bill. It has something for every disaster buff. Recommended.
