More About the Author

Don does the writing, but in addition to what he knows, he gathers information and updates from long term friends with whom he shared years as a Green Beret. Some technical information (knife sharpening) comes from other experts.

Don has never been employed in a steady, nine-to-five job. In his twenties, he lived and worked in both Europe (Spain, France, and Germany for which he speaks the languages fluently). He then moved to Southeast Asia, where he headquartered in Thailand while traveling to Laos and Cambodia. Upon his return to the US, he carpentered, worked as a USPTA tennis professional, was a volunteer San Diego cop, and speculated in real estate.

In early 1976, Sgt Don Paul was called to active duty as a Green Beret. While jumping into the Panama Jungle at night from 1,000 ft. both parachutes failed---which brought his Special Forces career to a sudden halt. He became a Christian and continues to work for various fundamental churches.

While recuperating in the hospital, he started writing and never stopped. He has traveled all over the world with a computer and frequently works in libraries while waiting to hop. He's visited New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Guam, Okinawa and Korea. He went to Puerto Rico to live and sail on a 30 ft Trimaran but returned due to high crime in the Virgin Islands and piracy at sea. He also lived in Costa Rica.

His how-to books have sold consistently for almost 20 years and he has appeared on over 250 radio and TV shows all over the country.

During the last three years, he has studied acting in Hollywood and appeared in several commercials. He writes and occasionally performs stand-up comedy. He asks young children, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Not that he cares so much about the kids' futures . . . Really, he's looking for suggestions.

This review is from: Great Livin' in Grubby Times: New Ways to Survive in Style (Paperback)
What can I say, it's a great Book. This book contains the most comprehensive guide to practical bullet proofing that I have been able to find. I also appreciated the well thought out, easy to understand illustrations.

4.0 out of 5 stars When times get grubby, this is the book to have!, April 6, 2001

I first saw this book at the house of a friend of mine. Of course, I found the title very interesting. When I began thumbing through the book, I found it was hard to put down. Don Paul is obviously very experienced in the ways of outdoor survival. He is a great writer, and passes on his infomation to you in a very clear manner. Not to mention the fact that he is extremely humorous at times. One thing I especially enjoyed in this book was the section on how to pick out a guard dog in "grubby times". I think you will find it a very interesting theory. I would definetely reccomend this book to anyone who is interested in learning outdoor survival techniques, or who wants an enetertaining piece of reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book will save your life!!!, July 25, 2006

WOW! to sum it up in one word. Don Paul strikes again with another ingenious survival manual that is only possible with years of experience having death constantly around the next bend. Highlights include: combat gunnery (what to do when you have a big gun and they have a little gun and vice versa), choosing a dog and taking out an enemy's, sending powerful messages by your actions, capturing and destorying the enemy emotionally, car to car combat, possible geographic locations for escape when the grubby times hit, tactics for combat involving a spear, lead time, and the joy of night attacks. I had just finished the prequel to this and am already looking forward to the Happy Handgunner! No home should be without this book. Thank you Don Paul and God bless!
