This review is from: Great Masters: Caravaggio [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video is an excellent companion to any book on Caravaggio. It is not as detailed as a book on artworks, but instead of just featuring the paintings, the viewer can also see where the works of art are housed. Caravaggio made many of his paintings with a distinct setting in mind, for ex: A Bishop would request a painting of John the Baptist to be hung over the altar in a certain chapel. Caravaggio would check on the placement, lighting, surrounding artworks etc., and then go to work on the painting. Now you can see what Caravaggio envisioned; it was more than just the painting. Also, there is good music; biographical details furnished by a narrator; and other settings such as Rome, and Malta to belp enliven Caravaggio's life.
