a dead man's shoes, December 10, 2003
This review is from: Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery (Paperback)
It can't be easy stepping into a dead man's shoes - and judging Craig Brown is pointless - at least we do have another CVCM novel.
Sections of the book are on a par with Something Nasty (especially the interview with the Dominicans) ... others clearly aren't, including, sadly, the ending. This leads me to suggest that this is one for the fans - Bonfiglioli's past glories are enough to keep you going to the end.
Perhaps it's as well Mr Brown wasn't able to tie up all the loose ends, thus leaving us with the luxury of being able to use our imaginations to decide what Bonfiglioli had planned for them and Charlie.

Shaven back into ecology., September 24, 2011
This review is from: Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery (Paperback)
This book is incomplete and Craig Brown does an unsatisfying job of tying all the loose ends together in order to get Kyril Bonfiglioli's unfinished manuscript to publication. That said, The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery in absolutely no way suffers from the shortcomings of the last chapter (courtesy of Mr. Brown). It is extremely pleasurable to read and represents Bonfigilioli's best and least restrained work. Absolutely a must read for any fan of his limited catalogue.
