A Labor of Love,
By Nostalgianaut "Butako" (Tokyo) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Great Movie Serials Cb (Hardcover)
This book is a great source for information on the chapterplays of the silent era onward. There are some interesting factoids, such as how Kirk Alyn(Superman) and Lyle Talbot(Lex Luthor) would trade recipes on the set. Alyn later became a food writer for a local paper. I wanted more of this behind the scenes information and less rehashing of the serial plots. Nevertheless, the author's love of his subject is clear and he pays great respect to the comic books from which many of these serials were born. Batman in particular sounds like a racist travesty, with the actor playing Robin sporting a visible tattoo and Batman's gut hanging over his belt. Captain America also got the sore treatment, Cap was given a gun instead of shield. Interesting book on a long lost subject.
