Until the mid-1960s, many of the best black athletes often attended black colleges because of discrimination and unspoken quotas in most major-college athletic programs. Hunt, a Philadelphia sports journalist, gives those black colleges some long overdue recognition with this collection of brief profiles showcasing their illustrious graduates. Included among the 27 athletes who attended black colleges before succeeding at professional or Olympic levels are Walter Payton, Willis Reed, Earl Monroe, Edwin Moses, Wilma Rudolph, and Jerry Rice. Each profile provides a brief overview of the individual's accomplishments along with a few comments from competitors and teammates. There are also capsule histories of the major black collegiate conferences, lists of black college alums currently on major-sports rosters, and an all-time black college football team. The text is more celebratory than insightful, and the volume has a scrapbooklike feel, but it will fill a void in collections where interest in African American athletes is high.
