5.0 out of 5 stars Wrong Use of a Mill July 28, 2012
I have a Mill like this. Guys, I've read many of your reviews and found one thing in common. You all don't know the slightest idea on how to use a Mill. I have a Molino Mill bought since 1995 and its still going strong. Wash the Mill with warm/hot soapy water.

You all are using the Mill wrong. Some of you are actually putting a serious strain on the grinding process. I've ground crack wheat into flour, sesame seeds, flax seeds, nuts, dried pepper pods into finely ground cayenne pepper standards; I'm not kidding. Chill nuts & seeds before grinding because it can turn into nut butter.

First of all, you cannot just tighten the knot in the front of the Mill all the way and expect a fine ground. Adjust the knot loosely to get a course ground, then tighten the knot, secure it with the wing knot; that is the one thats located closest to the first plate; it spins. Return the course ground grains into the hopper & grind a second time. Release the spinning wing knot before any tightening.

If you all want a finer grind; then put it back in the hopper again & tighten the knot some more and grind a third time. You tighten the front knot as to how fine you want the grind.

You all cannot have the two plates grinding against each other without anything between the two plates, surely you'll get metal fillings because the teeth are being worn down.

Grinding the grains might be time consuming; yes. But you all are giving the Mills an undeserved name due to your inabilities to operate a hand crank Mill.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Deal! March 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
This is just perfect for milling barley or anything you want to crack. I have played with it to get the gap set right, and it works perfect. The shop where I buy my grains can grind grains for free, but now I don't need to grind the whole pile up front and take a chance of them losing freshness. I can now by in the much cheaper bulk sacks, which are not ground for free.

As for the item, it's very basic, but very well built. The bolt that holds it to the counter is correctly sized for the item, and the bolt that holds the crank can be replaced with a hex head for using a drill. I pulled the M8x1.25 bolt out and replaced it with a hex head. Now, I can use a drill to mill around 20 pounds of barley in around 20 minutes. It doesn't have a shield, but I just use a plastic container cutout over the outlet. This wouldn't be needed, but with the electric drill, it can really fly out! For 20 bucks, this is really a very good deal. Just remember, since it's cast iron, don't wash it unless you absolutely have to. If you don't dry it out thoroughly, you will get some surface rust. BTW, for reference, the aluminum hopper holds around 2 pounds of barley.

It's money well spent.

2.0 out of 5 stars Metal Filings Ginding Pinto Beans June 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this as emergency grinder for power outages to grind wheat, grains, beans etc. I am glad that I tested it first. After about 30 cranks of grinding dried pinto beans, the large cotter pin that holds bracket that locks one of the grinding surfaces bent out and allowed that grinding wheel to unlock and not spin with the crank. At that point grinder stopped working and I notice metal filings coming out of both ends of the grinder!

Also, upon removing the grinder table clamp, I saw that the swivel on the bottom of the tighten screw had separated and would no longer hold the grinder to the table.

It was hard to get a table that was just right for the short distance the clamping arm reached from the edge of the table. Something I will look for in the future, it is important because most tables have a lip that you need an arm long enough to reach past.

Finally, the entire package and grinder had strong smell of chemicals, I am assuming it was the metallic coating still curing. With the chemicals, metal filings and metallic paint in the the ground meal coming out of this grinder, I don't think this is safe for food preparation.

I would have given it a lower rating, but because it might not have broken and might work fine for smaller grains, to be fair I gave it 2 stars.

I wouldn't rely on it for an emergency solution, I think for beans and corn, you would get the same problem.
The grinder came with no manual or instructions for use.

1.0 out of 5 stars just a very cheap item
After getting the product I had got my dry corn out to make corn meal and while cranking the crank arm broke, almost like it was plastic or something but just cheaply made.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for bread flour, but good for other things.
Great little machine, but does not grind finely (which is what I was looking for). I was looking to make bread flour. This machine will be great for corn meal.
