This review is from: Great Northern Popcorn Original Stainless Steel Stove Top 6 1/2 Quart Popcorn Popper - Theater Popcorn at Home!
My search for a stainless steel, stovetop popcorn popper led me to his brand, Great Northern, among a very few others. Most stovetop poppers are aluminum, which I prefer to avoid so as not to leach aluminum into the food. The best reviews for stainless steel poppers were for Lindy's, however, that brand is nearly twice as expensive, so I gave this one a try, and we've used it quite a few times now. The Great Northern popper is very well made with sturdy steel sides and bottom. The lid latches on well during popping, and the handle crank turns very easily and smoothly. There are no problems whatsoever with the crank, as some poppers seem to have. Turning a crank is much less tiring than the old-fashioned way of shaking the pan over the burner, and makes a lot less noise! We use organic popcorn and organic coconut oil, which is very clear and light, and sizzles the popcorn beautifully. In a very short time, we have a huge potful of perfectly-cooked popcorn ... not one burnt kernel, and barely any unpopped ones. The trick is to use a small amount of oil and just cover the bottom of the pan with kernels, and also to use the right amount of heat, about medium high. If you put in too much corn, it will rise to the top and pack tightly there, stopping the crank from turning, and not allowing the kernels at the bottom to pop. The popcorn is delicious without adding butter ... we add sea salt, pepper, and sometimes turmeric powder or chili powder. I would love to give this 5 stars, but can't because although the lid latches tightly enough while cooking, when you turn the pot over to pour the popcorn into a bowl, the clamps holding the lid loosen up. The first time I made popcorn, the whole lid fell off into the popcorn bowl and I had a struggle trying to get the lid out of the bowl with one hand while hanging on to the pot with the other, and trying not to get popcorn all over the floor. Since then, I use an oven mitt to hang on to the pan with one hand while tipping it with the other. It causes a little stress in what should be a fun cooking experience. For this reason only, the Lindy's might have the edge. Otherwise, the Great Northern popper is great, especially considering its price.

Just received our Great Northern "Twister" popper this week and couldn't wait to try it out. After reading many reviews of several different brands of these on Amazon I decided on this one due to its construction (stainless steel as well as metal gears). After setting it up I couldn't have been more pleased with the operation of the handle/gears and spinner. Everything works flawlessly. Gave it a good washing and then proceded to use Jolly Time popcorn with Orville Redenbacker's popping & topping oil to pop our first batch of popcorn on our gas stove. It worked extremely well, was VERY easy to operate/turn with just one hand, and the popcorn turned out PERFECT. Using medium heat, I had no burnt pieces and nearly every kernel popped. VERY pleased with this popper and I highly recommend it to anyone shopping for these. This thing appears to be built to last.

As today is 2/18/2012, I purchased this item from Amazon about two months ago. It works great! We bought this because we were tired of trying to make popcorn using a hot air popper. We always found it exceptionally difficult to get the butter mixed in afterwards, and we had a mess combined with our poorly buttered popcorn. Enter the Great Northern SS stovetop popper...we wanted Stainless Steel to avoid issues with aluminum (which is at least theoretically tied into Alzheimer's/dementia issues) so we paid about $8-10 more to get the stainless version. This works really awesome....we just put two tablespoons of canola oil in, then we place 2-3 kernels of corn in to use as an indicator of when the pot is good and hot. Once the pan is hot, I add two tablespoons of butter, maybe 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and then 1/2 cup of kernels. Stir for 2-3 minutes, and you've got a beautifully toasted popcorn with the oil/butter/salt mixture beautifully congealed. Excellent product for the price...steer clear of some other companies...several others have plastic gears, which sounds just plain cheap to me. The gears on this unit are metal, and work outstandingly well. In addition, this unit is almost 1/2 the price of other similar stainless steel units, and gave me no issues, whereas if you read the reviews on the other units, you'll see that some of them have major issues. Highly recommended....happy popping! Cheers!
