Makes great popcorn and cleans up really easy.

The lid keeps popping off (very dangerous when using hot oil)) and the gear that works the crank handle unscrews and falls off.

***Update*** February 4, 2014...still working fantastic with about two years consistent usage! Cheers!

We bought this because we were tired of trying to make popcorn using a hot air popper, and we'll never go back. We always found it exceptionally difficult to get the butter mixed in afterwards, and we had a mess combined with our poorly buttered popcorn. Now my wife consistently says this popper makes perfect popcorn every time.

Enter the Great Northern SS stovetop popper...we wanted Stainless Steel to avoid issues with aluminum (which is at least theoretically tied into Alzheimer's/dementia issues) so we paid more to get the stainless version. This works really awesome....we just put two tablespoons of coconut oil in, then we place 2-3 kernels of corn in to use as an indicator of when the pot is good and hot. Once they pop, we know the pan is hot, so I add 1 tablespoon of butter, 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and then 1/2 cup of kernels. Stir for 2-3 minutes, and you've got a beautifully toasted popcorn with the oil/butter/salt mixture beautifully congealed and evenly distributed, and nothing is burnt. Repeat if desired!

Excellent product for the price...steer clear of some other companies...several others have plastic gears, which sounds just plain cheap to me. The gears on this unit are metal, and work outstandingly well. In addition, this unit is almost 1/2 the price of other similar stainless steel units, and gave me no issues, whereas if you read the reviews on the other units, you'll see that some of them have major issues.

I highly recommend getting your popping corn from Amazon, and buying organic. See http://www.amazon.com/Arrowhead-Mills-Organic-28-Ounce-Packages/dp/B0036Z3ULM -----This price buys you SIX 1.

My search for a stainless steel, stovetop popcorn popper led me to his brand, Great Northern, among a very few others. Most stovetop poppers are aluminum, which I prefer to avoid so as not to leach aluminum into the food. The best reviews for stainless steel poppers were for Lindy's, however, that brand is nearly twice as expensive, so I gave this one a try, and we've used it quite a few times now. The Great Northern popper is very well made with sturdy steel sides and bottom. The lid latches on well during popping, and the handle crank turns very easily and smoothly. There are no problems whatsoever with the crank, as some poppers seem to have. Turning a crank is much less tiring than the old-fashioned way of shaking the pan over the burner, and makes a lot less noise!

We use organic popcorn and organic coconut oil, which is very clear and light, and sizzles the popcorn beautifully. In a very short time, we have a huge potful of perfectly-cooked popcorn ... not one burnt kernel, and barely any unpopped ones. The trick is to use a small amount of oil and just cover the bottom of the pan with kernels, and also to use the right amount of heat, about medium high. If you put in too much corn, it will rise to the top and pack tightly there, stopping the crank from turning, and not allowing the kernels at the bottom to pop. The popcorn is delicious without adding butter ... we add sea salt, pepper, and sometimes turmeric powder or chili powder.

I would love to give this 5 stars, but can't because although the lid latches tightly enough while cooking, when you turn the pot over to pour the popcorn into a bowl, the clamps holding the lid loosen up.

I recently replaced the broken Whirley-Pop that I have been using broken for quite some time (the whole handle fell off)with the Great Northern. Big improvement...the pan is a little heavier and the gears are metal. One reviewer commented on the back half of the lid not staying fastened when trying to dump the popcorn and that is an issue and annoying with both poppers. If you are debating between the Whirley-Pop and the Great Northern, it is a no brainer and I strongly recommend the Great Northern. I have also found that it works very well on my glass top stove.

I love this popper. I have tried air poppers, and the electric poppers, regular stovetop (in a pot) and this is the best! Was worried from some of the reviews about the turning mechanism, but mine works fantastic, no problems. I did find out that you need to turn it in one direction, not the other, or else it'll come unscrewed, makes sense to me. And when it gets harder to crank, it's because the pot is full, make sure you're only using 1/2 cup of kernels at a time. I think a lot of people just want absolute perfection out of products, but if you don't need perfection, this is a fantastic piece of equipment to have. If the lid doesn't fit EXACTLY, then make an adjustment! That just involves turning it a centimeter or so so that the latch will catch on the side, my gosh! how hard it that? And when you turn it upside down to pour the popcorn out, yes, the other side may come unlatched...so what!!!! Just be careful, maybe hold it? I just pour my popcorn into a big stock pot and so it doesn't matter if the other side unlatches. Then I can add my salt and seasoning, put the lid on and shake it all around. That keeps my popper clean with only crumbs in it that I wipe out after it's cooled off. I'll wash it after many times of using it, which I use mine about 2-3 times a week. We have a family of 5, and so I make two batches and we have more than enough! It only takes about 4 minutes to make a batch, 3 minutes after the oil is hot. Which by the way, we use coconut oil, it is the absolute BEST for popcorn!!! I LOVE my popper!!!! So glad I bought it!
