5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection of works for two pianos, August 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Great Pianists 15 (Audio CD)
I must say up front that I have a hard time transferring musical impressions into words. Having gotten that out of the way, I wasn't familiar with four-hand piano music much before this CD. The Rachmaninoff suites are the highlights of this set, not to downplay Lyubov and Mark's marvelous artistry on all the other pieces. The second movement of the Suite No. 2 just about reached out of the speakers and choked me the first time I heard the secondary theme. It was pure beauty for those who like Rachmaninoff like myself. The Mozart Concerto, especially in the final movement, was stunning in the four-hand chords played precisely together. The Milhaud was delightful; the Poulenc was a fascinating discovery for one who knew basically nothing of Poulenc. The two Arensky Suites were slightly charming at best. What about the Busoni & Chopin? See for yourself and buy this variegated set by the man-and-wife team Bruk and Taimanov.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Duo, May 15, 2003
This review is from: Great Pianists 15 (Audio CD)
Few people here in the US will have heard of, much less heard recordings of, the duo piano team of Lyubov Bruk (1926-1996) and Mark Taimanov (b.1926). Their performing life occurred entirely during the Soviet era, having broken up as a team (and as a married couple) in the early 1970s. Fortunately, the people who put together the wonderful Philips 'Great Pianists of the 20th Century' collection of 200 CDs (actually 100 twofers) had the good sense to include them. Indeed, the only other duo included, as I recall, were Joseph and Rosina Lhévinne, and for a few tracks Robert and Gaby Casadesus. This team gets 2 1/2 hours for their recordings, and frankly they left me wishing for more.

Included are many of the mainstays of two-piano classic repertoire, much of it Russian: the two Rachmaninoff suites and the two Arensky suites, both done as well as I've ever heard them. I absolutely love the Busoni Duettino, based on the finale of Mozart's Piano Concert, K. 459 - absolutely charming; it is not a transcription for piano soloist and a second piano playing a reduction of the orchestra accompaniment, but a re-writing that is masterful.

Then there are the major French works for two pianos: the Poulenc concerto, the Poulenc sonata, and the ever-fresh 'Scaramouche' by Milhaud, with its saucy rhythms played with hair-trigger reflexes by this duo.

Finally, we have a creditable recording of the Mozart two-piano concerto. It is not absolutely top-notch, in my opinion, becoming a bit slack in the middle movement. Also there are plenty of other good recordings of this concerto in competition with it. [My own personal favorite is that of Murray Perahia and Radu Lupu.]

Give this (to most of us) unknown piano duo a try. You will not be sorry.

Scott Morrison

5.0 out of 5 stars The best piano duo ever, October 19, 2009
This review is from: Great Pianists 15 (Audio CD)
My Russian piano teacher was a student of Lyubov Bruk and introduced me to Bruk and Taimanov's recordings and I was completely blown away by them. Their dynamic range and lyricism is not-of-this-world even when they employ insanely fast tempos (example: Milhaud's "Brasiliera"). This is the piano duo that set the gold standard for 2-piano music.
