If you can get a copy of this book, one of the original prints, or even an authorized repro (if those still exist), it's well worth it. The book is a treasure trove of tips and hints in the great picture hunt for features and news photos. Dave LaBelle put together an excellent collection of images and suggestions. Truly inspirational!

I wish this book, or it's subsequent revision, "The Great Picture Hunt 2" was more widely available. It should be a standard text in all colleges with journalism programs. It contains valuable information and approaches that should be used whether you are going to be a photographer, writer, designer, etc. This book tells you how to be a journalist, not simply a photographer.
One of the most important things a photojournalist can accomplish is to make record of common people -- one that reflects the trials and tribulations, the joys, the triumphs, the values -- right there in one's own community. In your own backyard. Dave LaBelle is one of the best ever at doing this, and he shares his secret. It's not about having fancy equipment. It's not about technique. It's not about seeking recognition. It's about heart. Like Dave says, "The great photojournalists are not in love with the mechanics of photography -- they are in love with people and with life. Photography is the brush they use to paint the world as they see it." |
