Book Description

June 16, 2008
WINNER - in the category of Psychology at the 2009 Next Generation INDIE Book Awards! The Great Psychiatry Scam provides a detailed criticism of the profession of psychiatry, told from an autobiographical perspective. The critique expands on the analysis published in his book with Alvin Pam, Pseudoscience in Biological Psychiatry. Serious errors in logic, scholarship and standards of thought in psychiatry are exposed by Dr. Ross through humor, satire, autobiographical sketches and analysis. The field of psychiatry is not a branch of medicine in its current form. There is a posture of science, but the real substance of science is absent. Instead, psychiatry is dominated by folklore, anecdote and superstition. Fixing psychiatry requires two initial steps: acknowledging the state of the field, and devoting serious money and resources to mental health. Dr. Ross exposes the forlorn state of the field and proposes a solution, which can be found in his book, The Trauma Model.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Great Psychiatry Scam, August 3, 2009

This review is from: The Great Psychiatry Scam: One Shrink's Personal Journey (Perfect Paperback)
Colin A. Ross tells us about the dark side of psychiatry from MKULTRA projects to the fanatical search, within some psychiatric therapeutic practices, for people possessed literally by the devil or Satan. He pokes fun at psychiatrists from the old school before 1970 that denied the existence of incest and reminds us psychiatry to this day describes reality poorly. Ross treats patients with Multiple Personality Disorder who other doctors he says prefer no longer to treat. Often, he laments the lack of scientific rigor throughout the history of psychiatry from Freud to the present. But this is not a scientific book which applies science to any realm of psychiatry. No double blind experiment, like the one shown in an early 1990's Nova episode which discredited the facilitated communication between so-called experts and severe autistic patients, gets described in this book.

Once he gets started, he tells us a story of his life, including mostly the story of his career within the psychiatric profession. He explains his own experiences in the field and offers a point of view he says he explains more fully in some of his other books. Ross can be humorous and likable. I find myself agreeing with him and later not so sure. His language can be downright vulgar. And I can appreciate that.

This is not a scholarly work. There are no citations, footnotes, or end-of-the-book notes. There is no alphabetical list or index at the end of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Psychiatry Scam, December 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Great Psychiatry Scam: One Shrink's Personal Journey (Perfect Paperback)
Psychiatry is the biggest scam going, according to this book. I tend to agree.Experimenting on the unsuspecting public in the US, testing drugs on already vulnerable populations is standard practice. The field has not developed, outside of prescription drugs, in the last forty years. It is a tale filled with information for consumers to beware. Those who need psychiatry for prescriptions need to take the time to review credentials and ask questions. Psychiatry has contributed to the cultural stigma of mental illness by discrediting complaints and concerns. Its a scam.

Colin Ross is my personal favorite author off all. I try to read every single book he publish and he is very prolific. I appreciate the intelligence and not pushing attitude on a reader the way he writes books. His position I am neither a believer nor a disbeliever in anything person has to say. Colin Ross use scientific approach and use a lot of facts and research facts in his writing. You can form you own opinion after all.
