5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Career Exploration, Entry-Level Job Seekers
This book is all about entry-level jobs. New graduates with a bachelor's in social services or those who've been working awhile in another field and are considering a career change would both benefit from reading this book. It gives overviews of different types of jobs, and for each job it includes: tasks & responsibilities, possible employers, job titles, sample...

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but limited

DeGalen and Lambert have produced a book that I will recommend to undergraduates, but there are problems. On p. xvii they mention that "a high proportion of members of APA do have doctorates..." Well, all do. There are some associate membership categories. D & L also say that APA members do "not necessarily [have] medical degrees." Well,...

DeGalen and Lambert have produced a book that I will recommend to undergraduates, but there are problems. On p. xvii they mention that "a high proportion of members of APA do have doctorates..." Well, all do. There are some associate membership categories. D & L also say that APA members do "not necessarily [have] medical degrees." Well, few do. This sloppy phrasing raises questions about the authors' accuracy. My second general comment is that they do overlook the place of applied research for psychology majors--either at the bachelor or more frequently at the master's level.

But I will recommend it because our students do need help in thinking about careers

This book is all about entry-level jobs. New graduates with a bachelor's in social services or those who've been working awhile in another field and are considering a career change would both benefit from reading this book. It gives overviews of different types of jobs, and for each job it includes: tasks & responsibilities, possible employers, job titles, sample classified ads, traits an employer would be looking for, salary, advancement opportunities, and more! Most jobs require minimal education or experience. There's also a section on getting the job, including information about interviewing.

I would not recomend this book, as it does not include the inoformation that I had anticipated. I was disappointed overall and think it's safe to assume that there are better resources out there. The book included a lot of basic information, like how to write a resume/ cover letter and interviewing information. I initially purchased the book in hopes of re-examining my options in the field, since my degree is in psychology, however this was not the right resource for doing that.

This is a great reference to have in this economy when you can't quite make it in your career of choice. This book gives you great ideas and other sources of income still within psychology. I'm so glad I got it.

3.0 out of 5 stars An overview, January 5, 2001

This review is from: Great Jobs for Psychology Majors (Paperback)
Great Jobs for Psychology Majors details the breadth and extent of the evolving field of psychology. The authors, DeGalan and Lambert give a history of the development of psychology, the evolution and where we are now. It is a caustic field with controversaries, challenges and change. The book believes there will be an increasing direction of services to alleviate human suffering through both research and medical means. Also, psychology is branching into new areas of family, forensic, or the psychology of women or men which will direct the path for the future.
