When the earth speaks, you have to listen.
Great Quakes examines the 1989 San Francisco earthquake that claimed dozens of lives and cost billions of dollars and looks at how we've responded. Interviews with geologists who specialize in predicting and thwarting earthquake damage, footage of the great quake and fires that devastated the Bay Area, and reconstructions of powerful seismic events all help the viewer understand this vicious-seeming force of nature. Despite our best efforts, we're still only able to make general predictions about their occurrence--and "one per century" doesn't help us plan our vacations. Still, architects and city planners are learning from each disaster and focusing the rebuilding efforts on safer structures. With luck and perseverance, the carnage shown in
Great Quakes will one day seem as old-fashioned as Pompeii.
