This is a great book that I will treasure for years and years to come. The great thoughts of the ages wonderfully compiled by a very wise man. From Ghandi and Wordsworth to Christ and Thoreau. WOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Great Quotations by George Seldes, January 9, 2004
This review is from: The Great Quotations (Paperback)
This is an excellent work for literature majors, history buffs,
speechwriters, current events enthusiasts and a host of other
academics and professionals. Here are some gems:
o The great artist is the simplifier. (Ariel)
o The goal of all life is death. (Freud)
o Let us dare to read, think, speak and write. (Adams)
o All men naturally desire knowledge. (Aristotle)
o The wretched souls of those who lived
Without or praise or blame. (Dante)
o The greatest intellectual capacities are only found in
connection with a vehement and passionate will.(Schopenhauer)

Buy this book to round out your general knowledge of literature,
world leaders and the great speeches of our time and times past.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you only read one book of quotations, this should be that one, July 19, 2010

This review is from: The Great Quotations (Hardcover)
I've read many books of quotations, but none are better in my opinion than George Seldes' The Great Quotations or the 1985 updated version, The Great Thoughts. Most are longer than usually found in books of this type and thus give a sense of context lacking in other quotation books. Seldes always gives chapter and verse whenever possible, making it an invaluable tool for researchers. He defines great quotations as those which have had an impact on society for either good or ill; thus not all of these are good quotations from a moral standpoint, or comforting to consider, but they are always thought-provoking.
