I've read many books of quotations, but none are better in my opinion than George Seldes' The Great Quotations or the 1985 updated version, The Great Thoughts. Most are longer than usually found in books of this type and thus give a sense of context lacking in other quotation books. Seldes always gives chapter and verse whenever possible, making it an invaluable tool for researchers. He defines great quotations as those which have had an impact on society for either good or ill; thus not all of these are good quotations from a moral standpoint, or comforting to consider, but they are always thought-provoking.
