Book Description

March 1, 2008
"Great Quotations is better than a Harvard education!—Andreas R. Prindl, Member of The Board, Lloyds of London

"Great Quotations' wit and genius are guaranteed to make you sound better read than you are. But beware of using it on deadline: you can get lost in it for hours!"—Suzanne Fields, columnist for The Washington Times/Los Angeles Times Syndicate

"I am delighted to endorse this collection. It is useful, and full of sparkle."— William F. Buckley Jr.

"A treasure trove of gems culled from the historical vineyard. Anyone who reads through these sketches and quotations will be inspired by some of the finest thinking in Western civilization."—Burton Folsom, History Professor

Great Quotations that Shaped the Western World is a treasury of the greatest quotations in western history. The book is organized chronologically as a history in "bite-size" portions so that casual readers can use it as a coffee table book for browsing. Serious students and those who want to have an overview of western history should read this book from cover to cover. As Dr. Johnson said, "classical quotation is the parole of literate men the world over."

Editorial Reviews

Review

Almost everyone agrees that more education for good character would be helpful. Benjamin Franklin made a great step with his famous book, Poor Richard's Almanac, and now Carl H. Middleton is following in his footsteps.

—Sir John M. Templeton

Great Quotations' wit and genius are guaranteed to make you sound better read than you are. But beware of using it on deadline: You can get lost in it for hours!

—Suzanne Fields, Columnist for the Washington Times/Los Angeles Times Syndicate

Truly a delight. In a discussion, a quotation on how the Athenians lost their freedom came up. It was not in either Bartlett's Familiar Quotations or the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, but it was in Great Quotations that Shaped the Western World.

From the Publisher

Great Quotations is organized chronologically as a history in "bite-size" portions so that casual readers can use it as a coffee table book for browsing. Most portions are less than a page. Of the 136 authors in the Chicago Canon of the Great Books, only 11 (mostly scientists) are not included.

Most quotation books have been compiled by liberal academics that have overlooked conservative thoughts. But Great Quotations that Shaped the Western World was compiled by a conservative businessman, a "man in the arena" whose experience in evaluating national economies helps him to identify the cultural precepts that sustain liberty, democracy, and capitalism. Also, the author covers supply-side economics and the practice of management--things that increased America's standard of living by over a factor of ten in the past century!

Benefits: serious students--high school to post-graduate-- who want a competitive edge should read Great Quotations that Shaped the Western World. Reading ten pages daily completes it easily in a summer. At summer's end, readers can stand on the shoulders of giants when they write or speak. Dr. Johnson said, "Classical quotation is the parole of literate men the world over."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Quotations compiled by a Great Quoter, May 20, 2008

This review is from: Great Quotations that Shaped the Western World (Paperback)
If indeed this wonderful work is "conservative," it is because Carl Middleton is extremely so but, way more than that, has selected much of the best from the human brain that ought to be conserved. Unlike other compilations of Man's profundity, Middleton's book has "Middleton" all through it, which endows the work with wonderful grit and makes it therefore not simply 784+ pages of detached and bloodless pith. I am a militant liberal in my opinions and in my behavior on almost every issue except that of the intellectual and historic voice of our species, and so I say to any listerner that Great Quotations that Shaped the Western World reflects the shape of intelligent thinking not just in the West but everywhere else, around the globe. Thus, though the book may appear at times to lean far to the right, the truth is that, like the "ship" it is, its course is straight ahead, and its voyage is universal

5.0 out of 5 stars How each and every one of these quotes impacted society and changed it, May 8, 2008
This review is from: Great Quotations that Shaped the Western World (Paperback)
The words and the great people who say it - "Great Quotations That Shaped The Western World" is a near 800 page tome filled with the wisdom of the ages. From the words of Moses, Aristotle, King Henry VII, to many quotes in the modern era, this is a secular but no holds barred look at the entirety of western history and how each and every one of these quotes impacted society and changed it. "Great Quotations That Shaped the Western World" is a highly recommended reference for community library history collections.

Chock full of pithy, relevant nuggets. At any time I can turn to any page and find several short, useful passages or just sentences that are self-contained and easily grasped, and satisfying to me. Most of the selections are arranged chronographically (if you don't know what that means, this probably is not the book for you.) Another long section is arranged thematically. All the classics of Western Civ seem to be represented, and well picked. I will admit to being a scholar of sorts, but I do find this to be a treasure. Enthusiastically recommended! And it is grounded in morals and ethics, and the best in our culture.
