5.0 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT book! You MUST read it!
I really love this book. It gives you such a good feeling when you read it. The author must've really know what she was doing when she wrote this book. You will never feel confused about the way something works or looks. This book deserves 10 stars but that is not a choice in the ratings.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, but this book isn't really the #1 Dear America.
I was in the school library and I was looking at the Dear America books. I saw this book and I picked it up. I read the back and immediantly put it down and then skimmed through the book. It was so boring! I didn't think that learning about the American absession of railroads back then would be very interesting.

You might be thinking, " Oh, but you only read the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book! Could not put it down!, November 8, 1999

I loved this book. It is one of Kristiana Gregory's best books. It definately illustrates the issues as seen from a girls' point of view. This book was funny, romantic, and very intreging. This book had an outstanding plot. I could not put it down. " The Great Railroad Race" is a must read. It is similar to " Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie". If you have not read both of them, I suggest you do.

This review is from: The Great Railroad Race: the Diary of Libby West, Utah Territory 1868 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
I loved this book. It's my favorite book in the Dear America series. When i saw the title "The great DIARY of Libby West" i knew that it was going to be a good book, cause i like reading diary's. Most of this book was pretty enjoyable. I had an interesting information about the railroad race and life in America at that time. However, it was not as heartwarming as the other books in the series. The main reason i took one star of it was because it had a lot of discription all of that discription wasn't needed. But it captivated and interested me. The book was, however, sucessful with it's romance. My favorite thing about it was the way Libby steadily fell in love with Pete, her fathers assistant. In the end, i'd say the book was not all that accurate but had some good qualities. And finaly i would like to add that this book had and outstanding plot.I would advice you to go ahead and read it to find all the amazing things about what i said .

5.0 out of 5 stars capturing history, December 30, 1999

This review is from: The Great Railroad Race: the Diary of Libby West, Utah Territory 1868 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
the DIARY OF LIBBY WEST kept me captivated and interested. this book of the series is the best by far...many people dont know much about the era after the Civil War.. I thought this book captured the reconstruction of the United States economy very well...When reading the book, you were right there beside Libby and her experiences and feelings. The Dear America series lets me explore history with our having to search endlessly for books on that particular subject, yet it introduces me to different view points and periods in time I never would have dreamt reading about.

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific "Dear America" book!, December 5, 2000

This review is from: The Great Railroad Race: the Diary of Libby West, Utah Territory 1868 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
"The Great Railroad Race" was another terrific "Dear America" novel, in an 1868 diary form about 14 year-old Libby West .

Libby's father, a newspaper reporter, decides to travel west with the growing Union Pacific Railroad, for the chance to publish his own newspaper. Libby's mother refuses to stay behind in Denver, however, so the whole family goes along.

The story of Libby's time out west was very descriptive and interesting to read, with her making new friends, falling in love with her father's assistant, and helping her family. It was also pretty humorous at times! :)

I'd definitely recommend this book for ages 11 and up, to anyone who likes history, romance, adventure, or just a great read! Be sure to also read the "Dear America" books "Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie" and "West to a Land of Plenty", and also the "My Name is America" book "The Journal of Sean Sullivan".

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Dear America book!, March 11, 1999
This review is from: The Great Railroad Race: the Diary of Libby West, Utah Territory 1868 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
This was another great Dear America book. Libby West is fourteen and lives in Denver, Colorado. Her father is a newspaper reporter and he buys a printing press, then heads north to cover the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. Libby, her mother, and her six-year-old brother go with him. Libby makes a friend, Ellie, who is her age. She falls in love with her father's young assistant, Pete. She writes about watching the railroad being built in her diary. This was my favorite Dear America book

This review is from: The Great Railroad Race: the Diary of Libby West, Utah Territory 1868 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
I like The Great Railroad Race a lot. Libby was really a well developed character. When I was like 7 I went to buy this book and I thought " This is WAY TOO BORING!!", but I got it for my birthday last year and I couldn't put it down! I would recommend this book because the plot is interesting and eventful and Libby is like a real person she is so well developed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great story in historical America, November 11, 2009

This review is from: The Great Railroad Race: the Diary of Libby West, Utah Territory 1868 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
This was a very wonderful book to read that's all about how the railroads were connected together of where they are today. But, back then it was so amazing how hundreds of men worked through hard labor so that we could travel to certain destinations. This would be a book to enjoy reading to the whole family or just read to yourself.
