Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6 Although not an exhaustive review of the current state of robotics, this fun-filled compilation of robot facts and lore is sure to appeal. Short chapters present a plethora of brief passages on a variety of topics. Following the definition of a robot as "a machine that does things that people would otherwise do" come descriptions of robot applications, current robot population, the origin of the word robot and an overview of how robots work. The greater part of the book is devoted to short descriptions of different types of robots: historical robots, robots in film and fiction, in industry and households, ersatz robot pets, robot toys, competitions for robots, kits for hobbyists and even space-faring robots. Also included are robot jokes and trivia. An appealing assortment of illustrations ranges from useful to merely decorative filler; cover art is eye-catching. Minor annoyances are the authors' tendency to refer to robots as "he" rather than as "it" and a lamentable caption for an illustration of a robot that "can help Mom in the kitchen." Up-to-date, with the craze for GoBot and Transformer toys well represented, The Great Robot Book should prove popular. Jeffrey A. French, Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library
