Editorial Reviews

These informative biographies present a revealing look into the events, people and places that influenced the creation of the composer s major works and tell the story of the impact that Russia had on the history of western music.

Nikolay Rimsky- Korsakov was one of the greatest composers of the Russian nationalist school, as well as a great master of orchestration and music theory.

Rimsky-Korsakov was born on March 18, 1844 in Tikhvin, Russia. He studied piano as a child, and in 1856 he was enrolled at the Naval Academy at St. Petersburg, but continued his musical studies.

In 1861 Rimsky-Koraskov became an associate of the Russian composer Mily Balakirev, the dominant figure of a group of young, nationalistic composers including Aleksandr Borodin, Modest Mussorgsky and Cesar Cui. Together with Rimsky-Korsakov this group of composers became known as The Five.

So high was Rimsky-Korsakov's reputation, that in 1871 he was engaged to teach composition at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. His first professional appearance on the podium took place in St. Petersburg on March 2, 1874 when he conducted his Third Symphony.

From 1886 to 1890 he conducted the Russian Symphony concerts in St. Petersburg. He also completed Borodin's unfinished opera Prince Igor in 1889 and re-orchestrated Mussorgsky's opera Boris Godunov in 1896 after the deaths of the composers. As an orchestrator, he had a notable influence on the Russian composers Igor Stravinsky and Aleksandr Glazunov.

Among Rimsky-Korsakov's most famous works are the opera Le Coq d'Or (1906), and the symphonic works Capriccio Espagnol (1887), Scheherazade (1888), and The Russian Eastern Festival Overture (1888). Rimsky-Korsakov died in St. Petersburg on June 21, 1908 leaving a permanent influence on the music world.

2.0 out of 5 stars bare on the facts April 10, 2008
The narrator mentions his parents, his wife, and the age of his death. Still, this work is threadbare on the facts. For example, they note that he wrote "Sharazad" (sp?) and they play a 3-minute clip of it, but that's all.

Too many docs on entertainers become boring slide lectures. The creators here try to have movement. For example, they show photos of Rimsky's relatives but they move the camera from the wall where they hang to a busy outside scene. Old operas are shown with singing and moving performers.

This may keep your interests, but you won't learn much. That's for sure.

1.0 out of 5 stars Little substance and disappointing October 5, 2012

I ordered this hoping to find a biographical film covering R-K's life, featuring historical photographs, incorporating concrete information about the incredible Russian history that he witnessed through his life (and that shaped his life). Instead, this DVD offered a brief, quasi-atmospheric progression that was fully superficial and based largely on clips of operas from Soviet-era productions, minus supertitles, btw., that conveyed a certain amount of music, but no real sense of the characters, plot, or the reason for the scene's significance. There were pretty, but overly long and dated, atmospheric scenes (a maid in folk dress wandering through forest, a bubbling brooks, etc.) that were pointless. The music is nice, but unless one just wants to drift while the video clips of R-K's music plays, don't buy this. Don't buy this if you want any idea of his real biography or importance. I was particularly disappointed since many Kulture programs are excellent. I'd be leery of anything "biographical" in this particular series.
