Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-9-These 85 performance pieces are drawn from dramas, novels, short stories, and even a personal letter. The assortment is diverse, including biographies, fiction, plays, and classics. A scant overview precedes each of the offerings. The unfortunate gender division is not relevant in this day and age ("monologues for girls"; "monologues for boys"); a thematical arrangement would be more appropriate and helpful. All of the selections are copyrighted and subject to royalties. There is no index.

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. The Young Actors series has scored again with its latest collection devoted to theater and drama as "seen through the eyes of young people." Offering scenes and monologues from children's novels and fairy tales, the editors also provide an eclectic mix of "adult" drama and short story. The inclusion of mature selections, such as Lillian Hellman's The Children's Hour and Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth, makes the collection appealing to young adults for speech and drama study. Elementary students and teachers will enjoy the excerpts from such children's classics as the The Secret Garden, Little Women, and The Emperor's New Clothes. Monologues have been chosen from such contemporary works as "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" and Farewell to Manzanar as well as standards like Heidi and Peter Pan. A brief plot synopsis introduces each selection, encouraging readers to refer to the complete work. Teachers seeking resources and activities to extend or enrich classroom literature units will find this a handy tool for readers' theater or book talks. Providing a broad range of material with a wide spectrum of uses, this practical compilation is a must buy. Mary Romano Marks

3.0 out of 5 stars "Great" should have more "Fun", August 22, 2006

This review is from: Great Scenes and Monologues for Children (Young Actors Series) (Paperback)
It can't be argued that there are scenes and monologues in this book that are from some truly great plays... but for the most part I would say the subject matter is too heavy. "Great" scenes or monologues for kids would be fun, not depressing. I teach theatre to middle schoolers, and I had a hard time finding material out of this book to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars best scene book, November 9, 2009

This review is from: Great Scenes and Monologues for Children (Young Actors Series) (Paperback)
This is the best scene and monologue book I have found for my 11 and 13 yr olds to practice for acting class. Very contemporary without some of the over dramatics of other scene books. Easy for this age group to understand.
