Sammy Rivera is having apocalyptic dreams of the new millennium. As 1999 comes to an end, world events support his visions. Religious concerns, social upheaval and racial tensions are compounded by the Y2K/Millennium Bug dilemma which upends the nation's banking and transportation systems. Sammy, his girlfriend, and acquaintences, flee a rioting city. He is later faced with the threat of a terrorist act near his home.
Meanwhile, Jeffrey West, a programmer, has deserted the city, taking his family to a wooded, survivalist community; a new religion sprouts up in the desert; a zealous computer mogel has designed the new breed of information systems; the rich go on a Caribbean cruise; and, immigrants suffer the bias of American politics.
