Grade 6-9 Jenny's father is out of a job and decides to start a family business. "At Your Service" is intended to be every other working family's answer to how to get errands, odd jobs and household chores done while on a full work schedule. The Skinners are all commandeered into Dad's project, and their own after-school lives are put on hold. The venture is beset from the start by confusion and calamities: problems with the delivery van, runaway pets, bizarre errands, billing deadbeats, family conflicts, violin lessons dropped for dog-walking chores, love interests gone amuck and so forth. Readers know well before Mr. Skinner does that his half-baked scheme is doomed from the start. Poor planning, a naive sense of the scope of such a project and the absence of any business sense all contribute to giving the story a sense of the bitter end after it has barely begun. An (almost insultingly) predictable story line and an incredulous ending to this exercise in free enterprise are minimally compensated for by likable characters and competent writing.
