I have a small yard in Colorado, but I have severe arthritis and bending or lifting is Hell on my spine. The extension handle was a prime reason for choosing this unit. The other was the Nicad 7.2 rechargeable battery. Both work just fine. The unit can be used hand-held but, as noted, I need the extension handle. I'd never heard of Great States Corporation, but I have had bad experiences with Black & Decker and Sun Joe, so I decided to try it.
Assembly is a snap. Literally. Just unscrew the yellow locking cap to allow extending the pole (you will need to extend it a few inches in order to snap the mechanism in place even if you later want to shorten the length of the pole.) Slide forward the small lock at the base of the pole, press the cutter into place and slide the lock back. Done. Now snap the wheels in place (there are three wheel holes at about 1/4" spacing so you can choose your height setting.) Plug the power cord into the connecter on the pole and, as soon as you charge the battery - a 4-5 hour job, you are ready to go.
Most complaints about trimmers like this (and I read the reviews on all of the competing makes before deciding on this one)mention a lack of power. That's one reason I wanted a 7.2 v battery. But these things are not designed for heavy-duty cutting. Grass and light shrubbery cut just fine. If you need to cut dried or woody stuff, get something else. If you have matted or thick underbrush, the Great States will do it, but you will need to take several short in-and-out passes instead of expecting to chop everything down at once. Repeat. This is a light-duty unit. Again, if you have thick brush or weeds with thick stalks, take a couple of short passes at them.
Trimming and edging are simple. Just roll along as it clips happily away. The blade angle can be adjusted to suit your needs. The instructions say to remove from the pole and hand-hold the trimmer when cutting above ground level, but I had a few weeds growing up my fence and lifting the pole for a few moments caused no problem. In fact, I haven't yet used it as a hand-held with the included 6" shrub trimmer blade.
Cleaning with a soft cloth is recommended and occasional use of light oil (I'll use the same stuff that I use for my beard trimmer.) A snap on cover is supplied for the blade(s) when not in use.
I am very happy with this purchase.
