Zinman in Zurich ... ZOOM!!!

You may wish to explore buying this set on the Canadian Amazon ( amazon.ca) where it is presently selling for around 75 Canadian dollars. Several sellers in Europe have the set for just over 100 dollars. The present price (April 2014) on Amazon.com is $ 285 and it is "out of stock."

Comments on the box:
I like the box itself and the covers of the CD's. For example, Artist's portraits of the composers show an old and young Beethoven and a very old Brahms. (Why do most portraits of Brahms look like Santa? As a clean-shaven youth. Brahms was rather handsome ... as is the portrait of Robert Schumann on his symphony covers.) Take the top off the box and the CD's sit up nicely and you can see the contents of each. They are color-coded by composer and are easy to remove and put back into the box. The booklet in the box is minimal but shows the contents, brief comments, recording times and a few pictures. (My favorite box sets are the "Murray Perahia First 40 Years" and the "Fritz Reiner CSO collections." They contain excellent books with hard covers, but the CD's don't sit up with color codes, or are they easily reordered as in this excellent "Great Symphonies" box. (A minor caveat ... 21 of the discs in the box are NOT symphonies at all ... but I suppose marketing "Zinman in Zurich" would be tough!)

Comments on the recording engineering:
We already owned the Beethoven symphonies and concertos and found ourselves saying "mon Dieu ... von Himmel ... we haven't heard that before." These CD's have a spectacular clarity and detail, even in the loudest passages. Some of this surprise may be the newer editions David Zinman uses. There is also an incredible balance to the four sections of the orchestra.

First thing why Amazon USA selling this box set at such a high price.I ordered this box set on the day it was released in UK.In my vast collection of CD I did not have a single collection on recording of Zinman so impulse I bought this limited deluxe edition of this box set.The sound of the music is beyond compare,it is crystal and could believe my ears what I was listening. I have several version of Beethoven and Brahms symphonies but these symphonies sound like Toscanini in modern sound. This is one of the best box set that I bought this year and none of the cd that I have listened so far has disappoint me and can not wait to move forward. This is a limited box set and all I could say buy it now as in future the price will increase from third party seller. Happy listening. If you want detailed review look at Amazon UK review.
