Book Description

April 1, 2003 Enriched Classics (Book 5)

Born to an unfortunate heritage, orphaned, unsympathetically raised, and then abandoned, Edgar Allan Poe struggled for greatness in an adverse social and economic climate -- a setting not improved by his fiery temperament and caustic criticism of others. Poe's melancholy brilliance, his passionate lyricism, and his tormented soul would make him one of the most widely read and original writers in American literature. Here, in one volume, are his classic short works: masterpieces of horror, terror, humor, and adventure -- and the finest lyric and narrative poetry of this ill-fated genius whose influence on both prose and verse continues to this day.

Pocket Books' Enriched Classics present the great works of world literature enhanced for the contemporary reader. This edition of Great Tales And Poems Of Edgar Allan Poe contains the original Pocket Books introduction, first published in 1951, along with an updated selection of critical excerpts, and suggestions for further readings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Literary Best Buy, June 18, 2004

You'll not find better literature for this price anywhere else. If you're a fan of Poe's work, then there's probably no reason on earth why you shouldn't own this book. My two favorite sotries are "the cask of amontillado", and "the black cat". The introduction is short and informative, and leads perfectly into Poe's work. If you've been made to read any of his work in college or highschool and think you'd like to see more of that genre, you won't be disapointed. There are other collections of Poe's work, but this is an extremely inexpensive alternative to the same great stuff. The only thing that I truly disliked about this edition is that the actual print is extremely small and not clear at all.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great content, hard to read, October 9, 2006
This review is from: Great Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe (Mass Market Paperback)
Poe was a genius...no doubt about that. This is a great collection of his work.

But....the typeface in this book is incredibly hard to read! The font is too fat, or something...making it hard to see what the words actually say. It hurts my eyes to read this. I would buy another book of Poe's works that is easier to see.
