...well organized and clearly written...very moving particularly with the incorporation of many excellent illustrations...the book is able to convey the enormous size and complexity of the prediction problem that still faces earthquake experts. The analysis of how the disaster was handled from a human perspective is a crucial section of this book, and I feel that many people working in earthquake emergency preparedness would benefit from the Tanshan story...I definitely recommend the book, not only for people tryin to plan for and mitigate the results of earthquake hazards, but for the general public. --

Katharine Kadinsky-Cade Pure and Applied Geophysics Vol 134 No 1January 1990 This book is a concise distillation from various (mostly Chinese) books and reports, and summarizes what is now known of the human, engineering and seismological aspects of the disaster. It is well illustrated throughout with abundant, well-chosen photographs, maps and diagrams: such a welcome change from the days of murky illegible figures and maps with no scale! An exciting and gripping account that is hard to put down, being both frank and blunt, without being sensational... The effects of the earthquake on the population of Tangshan are described with a clarity that seems detemined to set the record straight and document the lessons that were learned... I hope many people read this excellent book. (Geol. Mag. 127 (1)) --
