Eric A. Kimmel's THE GREAT TEXAS HAMSTER DRIVE: AN ORIGINAL TALL TALE tells of Pecos Bill's daughter Sal, who wants a pet hamster. But the hamsters breed madly, and soon thousands are running around the range causing chaos. What to do? Why not drive them to Chicago to become city pets? Thus the great Hamster Drive begins...with Bruce Whatley's drawings fueling excitement.

This tall tale brings you a slice of Pecos Bill's family life -- and you know everything is bigger in Texas. Including hamster herds! The illustrations are a hoot.
Parent note: uses replacement curse words, like "dern", "dang," "dagnabbit."

I grew up in Pecos, and most of my family has lived there for quite a bit of time at one part of their lives or another, so we're all familiar with Pecos Bill. This book focuses on the children of Pecos Bill and Slue Foot Sue, specifically, their daughter, Slue Foot Sal. This book is sufficiently entertaining, and is just the right distance beyond believable to become an "official" continuation of the Pecos Bill tall tale. My animal loving daughter loved it. I think she would have liked it even if she wouldn't have had her loose ties to the West Texas region. Fans of the original tale will find many references to it, however they are low key enough to pass under the radar of those who are not.

The kids thought it was great. I found reading it to them to be interesting. The book's premise is so "far out" that even the youngest sees the humor.
