Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6--Victorious at the Alamo, Santa Anna moved east to mop up resistance and firmly secure the territory for Mex ico. Santa Anna's coming terrified set tlers: some men organized to resist; women and children hid or fled. During "The Runaway Scrape," as this time of fleeing was later called, occurs the an ecdotal account of two neighboring families at Nacogdoches, near the Sa bine River that separates Texas territo ry from Louisiana--and safety in the United States. Most of the action cen ters around two girls, age ten. Jane, conniving and selfish, is no role model for anyone; Manda plays with Jane buts resents Jane's tricks. Incidents involve a pet pig, a mad dog, an encounter with a skunk, an ice storm, and a flight to cross the Sabine. This fictionalized sto ry can stand on its own, but under standing of the Scrape situation will be greatly enhanced by Leonard Everett Fisher's The Alamo (Holiday, 1987) and John Jakes' Susanna of the Alamo (HBJ, 1986).

5.0 out of 5 stars My second grade teacher, February 5, 2006
My second grade teacher wrote this book. She read it outloud to us before it was published! As I remember it is a historical-fiction adventure story..I think I remember the part about the Native Americans walking past on the Trail of Tears...
