Editorial Reviews

Review

“The history of the theatre is also the history of theatres, a fact that this beautifully illustrated, entertaining book celebrates.” -- Sir Anthony Hopkins

From the Publisher

London has, by far, the world’s largest and most varied theater scene—a scene that is among the city’s principal attractions. And with the recent influx of stars like Nicole Kidman, Kathleen Turner, Kevin Spacey, and Gwyneth Paltrow, the West End has never enjoyed a higher profile. The attractions of a fine corpus of actors and directors are well–known, but the theaters themselves have a remarkable history and much architectural interest. This outstanding illustrated guide, now in an updated edition, tells the stories of 60 of the leading theaters in Central London.

This books was exactly what I was looking for -- an insider's view of the closed world of the West End. Many other books give you general information about theatres and actors, etc., but this is far more unique. The author is personally knowledgeable about the subject and able to give amusing, valuable anecdotes about West End culture from the inside.

If you want to know what goes on backstage, or how theatre funding really works, or where actors go to eat, this is the book for you. I enjoyed it immensely!
