Anna Mae Bullock was born in Tennessee, but moved to St. Louis as a teenager. There she met rock and roll performer Ike Turner and persuaded him to let her join his backing vocalists. Eventually Anna impressed Ike so much that he gave her equal-billing, and the new name "Tina". They became the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, and married in 1962.
