I was a bit disappointed in this purchase as I had high hopes for it from the reviews. While I really like the idea of the book the contents are highly skewed to the west coast and didn't really give me a good sense of what it would actually be like to live in or visit the different towns. While the listings do have a lot of information it is mostly in the form of facts & figures and lists of local attractions but I couldn't get a real sense or feel for what the different towns are like.

A WELCOME UPDATE,

I was happy to see a new, revised copy of the Great Towns of America come off the press. I can now toss the version from 1998 that I was still carrying around. I travel a great deal and always take a Vokac Great Towns book along, whether it is one of the more specialized area guides, or an all-encompassing tome like the GT of America. When you roll into a town that you have never before visited and need a clever, interesting little place to eat, you can always pick a winner from a Great Towns book!

The Great Towns of America is a comprehensive thorough guide to some of the most interesting places in this country. Restaurants, lodging and places to see are covered accurately and briefly with very little that matters left out. References for the economy, politics and weather really help give a true feel for a town. With the few towns I knew really well I found their observations incredibly accurate. With the towns I have visited because of this book my visits have been greatly enhanced. WARNING: Leaving this book in the "library" in one's home for the purpose of frequent perusals will result in travel plans. I am leaving soon to visit Ashland and Baker City OR and am beginning to formulate a visit to three towns in west Texas.

I got this book a couple of weeks ago on the recommendation of a friend. My husband is retiring soon and we're busy plotting out our travel route. We've waited all our lives to see the rest of the country and this book is full of great information about places we want to see and some we never thought of. We will be able to make informed decisions about where to go and and what to see. If we didn't have this book we may have missed out on some really wonderful places and side trips we would never have known about. Choosing a restaurant or finding place to stay will be easy with all the information packed into this book. The "Weather Profile" is also helpful so we know what to expect and plan our wardrobe accordingly. The elevation is even listed for each place! Can't wait to explore the "Great Towns of America!"

All the info you should need,

I recently received The Great Towns of America by David and Joan Vokac from a dear friend. I was curious as to what was said about some of my favorite towns. I wanted to compare my experiences with those of the Vokac's after they had explored and recorded their input on these wonderful places.I found the information on the towns my family love to be accurate and also contained - right at my finger tips - other information that I might not have known was available without my doing extensive research. And now, I have found that individual chapters are available on iTunes and can be downloaded to your smartphones and iPads. To have David and Joan's research right there for me first to be viewed before I am on the road in book form and then with me on my phone is remarkable. Added bonus? t appears that the photos are in color in digital format! Thank you both for all the work you have put into this book. I can't wait to explore some of the mentions communities that are new to me and my family.
