Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Something's wrong in the town of Beaston. Dimwitted Mayor Hippo takes a while to discover the problem, but readers will soon catch on: "Beaston has too much trash." Investigating possible solutions to the excess garbage, the mayor and his animal retinue visit the town dump, incinerator, and landfill, briefly discussing the pros and cons of each: "The incinerator burns trash and makes energy!" but "It makes air pollution too!" Declaring a "Trash Bash," the animals launch a comprehensive clean-up and recycling campaign. Their ideas for cutting down on trash are easy enough to follow, if occasionally simplistic ("I only buy returnable bottles"). Attractively illustrated in ink and watercolor, the book has a comic-strip format and an engaging cast of characters. A list of "ideas for cutting down on trash" is appended. Timely, appealing, and funny. --Ruth Smith, Chicago Public Library

From Kirkus Reviews

The animals of Beaston realize something's wrong: litter mars their landscape, landfills are filling up, and no one wants a new dump in their neighborhood. Their solutions are exemplary, and followed up with a list of ``Ideas for cutting down on trash.'' Sensible, amusingly presented, with an excellent range of familiar but realistic suggestions. The illustrations' comical style helps make the message palatable. (Picture book. 4-8) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

More About the Author

I've been writing and illustrating picture books for children for over twenty-five years. Though I majored in art in college, at the time I wasn't sure what kind of artist to be. Fortunately, it turned out that combining words and art to create picture books was a perfect career for me. Most of my books center around a particular topic such as fractions, the solar system, writing, and so on. The characters and story lines help put the subject matter into a meaningful context for young readers.

After growing up mostly in Delaware, I moved to central Florida a couple of decades ago, and currently live with my husband Andy on a three acre property with hawks, herons, and horses (the horses live next door.) We love the rustle of the pines in the breeze, the screeching of sandhill cranes flying overhead, and the chattering of many small birds that come and go as they please.

4.0 out of 5 stars Help to Teach Recycling, March 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Great Trash Bash (Hardcover)
Mayor Hippo is very proud of his beautiful city but he knows something is wrong. After slipping on a banana peel, he realizes the problem is trash. Mayor Hippo calls a town meeting and suggests the animals have a trash bash. The citizens of Beaston come up with ideas of their own. They realize they can recycle items instead of throwing everything away. An excellent book to teach young children about recycling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource, March 4, 2008
By
This review is from: The Great Trash Bash (Paperback)
The Great Trash Bash is an EXCELLENT book. As a informal educator with a non-profit organization, I needed a book that covers waste reduction and recycling in a fun and innovative way. This book not only teaches recycling but many other aspects of the reduce, reuse, recycle, respect loop. Even if teaching about waste issues isn't your "thing" the story is sweet and the illustrations are endearing. Excellent Book.
