Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Clearly derivative of Martin Handford's Waldo titles, this large-format, search-and-find book contains 12 elaborately detailed spreads depicting various street scenes in the bustling town of Huddlesford. With each turn of the page readers are asked to find an increasing number of objects, to a total of 78 in the final illustration--a carnival scene in which are hidden (among other things) three babies, five musical instruments, seven flags, nine yellow cats and 12 golden goblets. Some treasure seekers may have trouble keeping track of their findings; remembering exactly how many of the 12 goblets one has spotted, for instance, is no easy task. This--and the considerable challenge of locating some of the tinier objects--may prove frustrating to youngsters. Although as cluttered and colorful as the drawings featuring the elusive Waldo, Russo's art lacks the complexity and inherent humor of Handford's. Ages 5-up.

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-6-- This ``Waldo'' wannabe is only for the most tenacious fans of the search-and-find genre. Readers join treasure hunter Sir Gordon Goodfellow as he searches for 12 ancient gold goblets hidden in the city of Huddlesford. The hunt is cumulative and, while it begins with Sir Goodfellow, it ends with the injunction to locate ``2 rabbits, 3 babies, 4 blue signs, 5 musical instruments . . . 12 golden goblets.'' The pages are truly crowded, with tiny figures jammed against each other; the population density of Huddlesford makes searching difficult compared to the ``Waldo'' books, in which figures are larger and less likely to be shoulder-to-shoulder. Moreover, the browns and dark greens of this one give it a dimly lit, heavy quality. Waldo's outrageous visual puns are missing, but now and then a man with a red striped shirt and blue pants can be spotted--a nice, humorous touch. For die-hard puzzlers with good eyesight. Not for middle-aged book reviewers with bifocals. --Anna Biagioni Hart, Martha Washington Library, Alexandria, VA
