5.0 out of 5 stars The Heavy need to be known, April 17, 2009
This review is from: Great Vengeance & Furious Fire (Audio CD)
This a great band and a great album! It's rare these days to hear a complete album, but they did it. Every song is solid. They also accomplished something bands like the Stones, Zep, and the Beatles did so well...they wrote an album that has many different music styles. Funk, punk, soul, garage rock, and blues are all represented. Im not saying The Heavy are on the level of those other bands, I'm just pointing out, they know how to mix it up. Great album, but it now!

4.0 out of 5 stars More Please!, May 24, 2009

I want more! I downloaded this gem from listening to one song and now want more! Lotta funk mixed in with a great rock sound that sort of has semblance to Jack White and the Raconteurs. I ranked this a 4, but would give 4.5 if they allowed. Enjoy & play loud!

5.0 out of 5 stars My new favorite album, March 18, 2009
This review is from: Great Vengeance & Furious Fire (Audio CD)
Luckily, my sister is always hip on the best music and she passed this gem along to me. Because, otherwise I would never have heard of this awesome band. Gritty, dirty, FUNKY soul rock would be the only way I could describe this album. Great for driving, dancing, cleaning, drinking pretty much great all around. I do really wish The Heavy would make a new album soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars strong, sexy funk, April 6, 2008

kate (dublin, ireland) - See all my reviews
you MUST check this album out. for fans of 70s funk and the latest indie rock. its heavy, steamy, passionate, funky, upbeat and rhythmic. i see funk making a HUGE comeback based on this group. i defy you to not move to track 2 "Colleen" or 4 "That Kind of Man".

this band hails from Noid, England, and their music has flavours of gnarls barkley, danger mouse, james brown, sly and the family stone, cee-lo, bootsy collins, and more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Funk and Furious Rock, April 27, 2008
This review is from: Great Vengeance & Furious Fire (Audio CD)
If you are wanting something that sounds straight from the 70's with crushing drums, scratchy vocals and hard guitar rifts, then snag this little gem. A nice blend of garage rock and funk. Great Vengeance and Furious Fire is the first album by Heavy. That Kind of Man, and Colleen are my personal favorites; but the entire album kept my attention. Looking forward to future works by this band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indi music invading your soul, December 12, 2009
I was listening to Michelle Myers Saturday broadcast on KEXP a few weeks back and she played an infectious cut from their follow up album "The House That Dirt Built". Usually music needs some time to grow on me but the song Short Change Hero cut deep with an intoxicating groove that sent me on an instant quest to search them out.

They have a nice blend of blues, funk and rock that defies categorizing. This is hands down one of the five best CD's I have purchased this year rivaling their sophomore "The House That Dirt Built". Do yourself a favor. If you purchase no other music in the next year get one (or both) of The Heavy's releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget these other reviewers... they're clueless, April 6, 2009
This review is from: Great Vengeance & Furious Fire (Audio CD)
I'm stunned this album has received anything but 5-star ratings from Amazon's reviewers!
Bottom line, The Heavy's debut is superb. It's gritty, it's fun, it's hard to overplay, it's great for driving, solid top-to-bottom, refreshingly well balanced (as far as musical styles they incorporate), and just plain good.
I've been giving copies out to friends and the response has been only positive. Don't hesitate. Buy this album and thank G-d rock is alive and well :)

(Incidentally, they're even better live)

4.0 out of 5 stars Music Jules Winnfield would love, December 18, 2008
This review is from: Great Vengeance & Furious Fire (Audio CD)
A creative, wide-ranging album that is ideal for those like me who love the space between blues and funk. The big-time funkerrific movie-soundtrack songs are balanced by some great slow blues and blues-rock. Will take your party from the dance floor to the bedroom all in one record!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great band!, July 27, 2010

I was looking for the song "How You Like Me Now?" and after listening to the song samples, I figured I would take a chance and bought both "The House That Dirt Built" and this album as well. I think I fell in love with both of them after hearing each CD the first time, they are just really easy to listen to. The music has such a unique style. The CDs have quite a variety of style...there is a sound a little like the new Black Keys album, Dead Weather "You Don't Know", classic James Brown or The Meters "How You Like Me Now?", and some a little more poppy.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new favorite album, July 20, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Heard the song "Colleen" on the soundtrack for Mad Money and thought, whatever that is, whoever it is, I must find it and own it! That's probably the best song on the album, but the whole thing is outstanding. So much better than the garbage maundering out of the radio airwaves these days. If you like 70s funk you'll love this updated twist on it--like listening to Sly and the Family Stone with a garage band backing them. Amazingly catchy tunes, real melodies, scrungy guitars, great drumming, this band has it all. You won't be disappointed.
