Grade 5-6-- A book that focuses on the design and construction of the two Voyager probes, and what they "saw" as they flew by the four giant planets between 1979 and 1989. The authors write with clarity and enthusiasm, imparting plenty of information without bogging down in technical detail. Their tale of discovery is enhanced by arrays of sharp, well-chosen photographs, mostly in color, plus a running timeline and plenty of tables and diagrams. They conclude with a chapter describing space projects planned or underway, including a short note on the Hubble Space Telescope and its troubles. Captions and side essays are placed in overlapping, sometimes canted boxes, for a crowded-looking layout; otherwise this account of "the most successful space mission ever" will make a useful, attractive addition to the astronomy shelves. --John Peters, New York Public Library
