5.0 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Album from Justin Currie, June 10, 2010
By
This review is from: Great War (Audio CD)
The Great War is another great album from Justin Currie. After several listens, I would say it is very close to or equal to his last solo effort, "What is Love For"? The albums are similar in style and themes and I definitely recommend both. As many critics have said over the years, Justin Currie is a true tunesmith. This collection of 11 songs has excellent lyrics that are moving and actually thought provoking at times (an achievement for pop/rock these days). As always with Justin, the melodies are catchy and memorable throughout and the vocals are exceptional.

Justin Currie is one of the most underrated artists out there. If you are fortunate enough to be in a city where he plays live, don't miss the small venue experience. I have seen him several times and all shows have been outstanding!

Another great release from the former DEl Amitri frontman. If you liked DEl Amitri you will really enjoy this release. People always say they don't write songs like that anymore, but Justin still does ! " A man with nothing to do " Another classic. This cd still has all the hooks you would expect. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant, September 13, 2010

Justin has produced his best ever! He has always dazzled me, confused me at times(particularly with "Can you do me good)", but now I get it! He has come somewhat full circle with "The Great War", but still maintains the distain he feels as well as the the dichotemy he perpetuates.

Buy this CD!! It's brilliant, and it will give you insight to him he never allowed before this. A Del Amitri fan since inception, his voice is better than ever, his lyrics very intimate yet juxtaposed as usual, and it makes me feel like he let me into his world just a bit.

He'll only get better!
BUY IT JUSTIN FANS!!

5.0 out of 5 stars For Del Amitri Fans, July 1, 2010

This is the second solo album from Justin Currie, former front man for Scottish band Del Amitri. Currie's voice has just the right amount of grit for my taste, and his lyrics spin poignant tales of love lost (and sometimes that's a good thing). I didn't like this one quite as much as "What Is Love For," but I still recommend it for all fans of Del Amitri, as well as fans of great songs sung well.

After Justin's last album, WHAT IS LOVE FOR, I was eagerly looking forward to his next. This one is somewhat lighter in tone with a couple of great pop songs, albeit with the unique lyric perspective that Justin brings - he plunges the knife in, but does it while you're not looking, distracting you with a witty turn of phrase. In fact, one of the songs - EVERYONE I LOVE - I found to be too much in terms of the lyric. If you hear it, you may know what I mean. No apologies are made however and everything is presented beautifully from a man who knows he is among the best at what he does.
Looking at the titles of the songs would be enough to put some people off this album, I'm sure. He can and does present life and relationships as struggles which are unresolved and likely to remain that way. This review is an an unreserved endorsement of the album, just in case you're not sure!

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant song craft, July 10, 2010

Seems that Mr. Currie has always written songs that fit my life. Early on it was "Kiss This Thing Goodbye". With this album it's pretty much every song. His lyrics have always had that particular phrase that perfectly describes the emotion or situation. Never mundane or tired. Clearly he spends great effort on the choice of every word. Add clever music and arrangements that then put the lyrics in settings that catch you off guard and you end up with "The Fight To Be Human". This song alone makes this a must have disc.
If you need reference points then take the best of the Dels. Add in some Uncle Devil and maybe the best voice in pop and rock and you have another great piece of work that ranks with his best.

Justin's newest solo effort is a must have for all Currie lovers. The album is a little uneven and Justin sometimes drifts into his mildly whiney mode, but overall it is Justin at his solo best.
