5.0 out of 5 stars A good combining of the literary and military
I read the Fussell book in the Oxford paperback edition of 1977, and enjoyed it very much. (And not only because Fussell was my professor of poetry and creative writing at Rutgers many, many years ago) Fussell has joined the literary sound and sense of the war with his personal experience (II World War) of a soldier "in the trenches". 3.0 out of 5 stars This book is not what I thought it was going to be.
This book is about literary work and how it was affected by World War I. If you like books about writtings, poems, ect. you'll probably love this book. I on the other hand like the historical facts, the story of the war. I would recomend to those of you that like the historical story. "A World Undone - The Story of the Great War 1914-1918" by J.G. This review is from: The Great War and Modern Memory: The Illustrated Edition (Hardcover)
Literary and military speak are brought together in a very exciting and revealing description of the honor and dishonor of war. I bought the illustrated edition in celebration of Fussell's
work. It is a good introduction to how fine literature can describe the brutality of war in a measured Augustan diction.

This will give you a deeper understanding of the enormous social, cultural & political sea-changes WWI ushered in. Illustrations are a welcome addition to a great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Reverberating, December 15, 2009
This review is from: The Great War and Modern Memory: The Illustrated Edition (Hardcover)
Our view of the world is shaped tremendously by our memory of The Great War.
Fussell's masterful book is both scholarly and emotion-packed. If you care about war and its effects on our identity, you must read this. The new illustrated version adds much more depth to an already powerful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Intellectual and Social History of WW I, June 11, 2011
This review is from: The Great War and Modern Memory: The Illustrated Edition (Hardcover)
I was enthralled with this volume from early on. I had never read the original 1975 version, but can't imagine an edition without the carefully selected and beautifully reproduced illustrations. I have always believed World War I to be both the singularly most important event of modern times and at the same time the most underrated, under-studied and under-appreciated major event of modern times. This is a very powerful, beautifully researched and written intellectual/social history of the impact of this war on the way we see the world, think about ourselves and our society, and remember history. A must-read for any serious sutdent of World War I.

A worthwhile read for those interested in poetry, war, modern history, the art of the essay, or the Brits.

Nice Book, lots of pictures; you don't have to read it if you don't want to. But there's lots of cool things about World War I you can learn from it. If that's what you're looking for, give it a shot.
