A lost classic!,
By Cody Lee Johnson (Beaufort, SC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I lived in Midwest City Oklahoma when this movie was bein' Made. I loved the movie from the start. It was true and down to earth. This movie inspired me to ride bulls myself and represent Rodeo all the time. I am sad to see that this movie is not only hard to find, but also not available in a DVD form like other classic movies. This makes no sense to me. I would like to see it done better justic than it has recieved.

Finally, a real rodeo movie.,

As far as I'm concerned, this is the first time Hollywood ever produced anything that accurately depicted the sport of rodeo and didn't make a complete farce of it. Whoever wrote and produced this movie actually did their homework. If you like rodeo, you will like this movie.

Haven't we all wished that we could go back and make it all better? H.D., a not so great bull rider is hurting, physically and emotionally. He goes home to heal his busted ribs and learns that his sister has put his father (H.D.'s hero) in a home for old folks. H.D. can't abide it. He needs money to save the family homestead and all he knows is bull riding. The icing on the cake is that his beautiful highschool sweetheart is now a widow. The rodeo is coming to a town not too far from home. Can H.D. draw and ride the bull that's never been rode? Does he have one good 8 second ride left in him? Can he stop rodeoing from town to town? The top prize is $100,000! Enough to save the homestead and start a new life!
This is just a great movie for anyone that still dreams.

A GREAT MATCH-UP OF ACTORS/RESSES TO ROLES,
This review is from: My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movies' strongest point is that the actors and actresses who portray the characters are so believeable in their roles. Scott Glenn does a masterful job as the bull-rider H.D., Ben Johnson couldn't be better as the aging dad who is beginning to fail, and is so fearful of spending his final days in an "old folks' home".
You empathize with H.D. as he struggles to keep his dad out of the nursing home, and you cheer for him as he painstakingly trains to ride the bull that if ridden would provide enough prize money to enable H.D. to realize his goal. The other actors and actresses who are intertwined in this movie are also masterful in their roles, including a true-to-life performance by the legendary Mickey Rooney. To put it in plain, everyday terms, this is just a charming, feel-good movie........

This is a great movie, and depicts one of the long-time status symbols of the West yesterday and today.
I have it on VHS and didn't pay that much for it. But, because I have watched it time and again, my tape is showing wear. I would love to have the DVD. This movie is special to me because it has Ben Johnson in it, and he and his wife were regular customers of mine in Thousand Oaks, CA. He was a very nice man and always the gentleman cowboy. The characters are real, the events exciting, and the language true to life. The movies of today with all their special effects lose a lot of the greatness of real acting. This is a good human interest story, as well as family interactions and dysfunction. It reminds those who watch about the importance of preserving the rights of the elderly, and of tradition.
