Great album, but not the best version,
By A Customer
This review is from: Great White (Audio CD)
This is a very good hard rock album. It's very consistent, gets good sound, and has some variety. However, you're probably better off buying it as Stick It+5 import, which is this same album, but remastered in 1999 with bonus tracks.

Early Great White,

Gritty and primitive is how I'd describe it. Not quite the clean and practiced sounds you'll hear on Once Bitten, Twice Shy and Hooked for example but excellent rockin' tracks nonetheless. Played this one from vinyl on university radio station WUEC-FM while it still offered multi formats in the 80's and before full affiliation with Wisconsin Public Radio. "Substitute" is Great White's rendition of The Who's "Substitute" and is as well done as their Zeppelin copies are! For those in need of a CD to replace the well worn cassette here's your answer.

A truly great album!,

I owned this album back when it first came out (on cassette) and really loved it. I am buying it again because I no longer have it in my collection. You will find, with this album, Great White is raw and "uncommercial" like there later albums. I love all there stuff but this one lets you listen to where they began. It's a must own for all Great White fans!

THEIR BEST ALBUM EVER,
By
This review is from: Great White (Audio CD)
Bar none, their debut was their very best output ever, especially during the mid 80's when they toured with JUDAS PRIEST for their DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH tour. Every track on this album rocks, no filler.
What also upsets me is that this album is way under represented in their live appearances or their greatest hits/best of stuff.

Cool CD!,

Being released in 1984 this album has the usuall sound for a hard rock band of that time period, but "Great White" is much better than a lot of the better know hard rock albums of the 80's.There is cover of The Who's Subsitute, that kicks some serious...!I would have to say Great White is just an awesome hard rock/metal CD that totally rocks.

You will love every song on this CD! On the Hard Rockers/Metal Heads listings it is #3 in it's time. I now rank it # 9 on my prefered tapes list. I am so stoked to see it on CD. I needed a fresh copy, my tape is wore out.

hard rock roots,

this album is more along the lines of straight ahaead hard rock, early to mid 80's style, than most great white material which is very bluesy. originally released in 1984, songs like stick it and bad boys display more of an attitude, while out of the night and on your knees have a more sexual theme, but then again, even they have attitude. three of the songs previously appeared on the on your knees ep. not so polished, little rough and raw around the edges, this one proves they can rock as well as they do the blues.

A lost early 80's hard rock gem,
This review is from: Great White (Audio CD)
What a pleasant surprise to pull this out of my old record collection, after buying a USB turntable, and find it in almost mint condition, complete with original shrink wrap and sticker still intact, the original release from 1984.
It's the only Great White album I own, and ever will, and the only one I really cared for. This album has a different sound than their future releases, it's raw and hard rockin', a little grungy, and produced by "Double Trouble's" Mark Wegener. They are sort of a "Ratt" type of 80's hair band, in that they have classic hard rock roots and don't wear make-up (just bad hair). Their future releases became a bit too "Warrant-esque" for me, but I always liked listening to this album repeatedly in high school back in the mid-80's. I am surprised there are only 9 reviews here of it, proving it's a lost or forgotten gem of 80's hair metal. In fact this album has more in common with 70's hard rock than glam metal, it's not going to please the cheese whiz girls and big hair fans of annoying bands such as post-Devil Motley Crue, Warrant, Poison, Winger etc..., Highlights are The Who's "Substitute" cover (worth it for that song alone), "Out Of The Night," "Stick It," "Hold On" and "Streetkiller." The rest of the tunes are all solid and fit well into the rest of the album (very consistent). It's a little raw and under-produced, but that gives the album it's charm. It's harder and more edgy than their semi-bubble gum releases to come afterwards, and just an underappreciated 80's pop/hair metal album all-around. Definitely check this one out.

Great White's shinning moment!A shark Attack on 1984!,

Great White is the kind of band that has various sounds as they became older, but this is the cd by them that rocks. They capture the 80's metal in it's prime with this album.Being their first album they had some great talent to show off.(also in 1984 great white did a reworking of a Frank Sinatara song called witchcraft for a Joe Piscopo video special, it's worth hunting down if you like this cd.It's had to find though it was only released on The Joe Piscopo video).
1.Out of the night(10/10)This is a great song, the chorus is catchy.Good guitar work to. 2.Stick It(8/10)A good standard track. 3.Substitute(7/10)I love the guitar work on this one!I remember seeing the music video for, what a guitarist! 4.Bad Boys(8/10)Suberb track,Jack's vocals shine and the guitar licks smoke! 5.On your knees(7/10)Another decent track. 6.Streetkiller(10/10)3rd best song on this cd.Vocals and guitar work are stunning and something fierce.A concert favorite! 7.No better than hell(7/10)Lyrics sound like a Kiss song a bit.Not bad! 8.Hold On(10/10)A great song with a more mellow feel, but still rocks.Good for blasting loud in the car! 9.Nightmares(10/10)Best song on the cd.The guitar intro is very cool and vocals are perfect.I just love the guitar sound though! 10.Dead End(6/10)Least favorite song on the cd.Not Bad if you liked the previous songs. To put it plain and simple thre is only 2 more good Great White cd's.Shot in the Dark and Once Bitten is the cut off point for this band. All three of these albums are great, but this and Shot in the Dark are the TRue GREAT WHITE! |
