A Taste of Wisconsin, October 27, 2008
This review is from: Great Wisconsin Restaurants: 101 Fabulous Choices by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Restaurant Critic (Paperback)
Great Wisconsin Restaurants provides, basically, a list of good quality Wisconsin restaurants with a several paragraph description of the cuisine and/or setting. The restaurants are chosen by, and the blurbs written by, recently departed Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel food reviewer Dennis Getto. As such, the restaurants tend toward his preferences - mostly upscale, mostly located in the Southern third of the state and tilted toward the California-style cuisine. That said, Mr. Getto selects many restaurants of very high quality and, thankfully, at least a few restaurants from every portion of the state. Who would have thought that a great restaurant could be found in Mayville, Wisconsin? (The Audubon Inn, by the way.) The blurbs are nothing special - nothing more than a half a newspaper food section review - but provide enough information to prepare a diner to make good choices at the featured restaurant.
Be careful, however, in making sure to update the information provided here. This book was published in 1997. Many of the featured restaurants have gone out-of-business or declined in quality. So be sure to at least run a web search before, for example, you drive all the way to Madison for a dinner at Deb and Lola's. (It no longer exists.)
