A great book,

This review is from: Great Works of Art and What Makes Them Great (Paperback)
Ruckstull was a well-known and respected sculptor in the early twentieth century, but his star was eclipsed by a modern-art movement he detested, especially Rodin. Ruckstull deserves recognition both for his own sculptures and for his writings.
This book is a remarkable achievement, a collection of Ruckstull's essays on the elements to analyze when evaluating a work of plastic art. It constitutes one of the most thorough systems of art evaluation ever assembled. He treats conception, composition, technique, manner, style, and a host of other aspects in considerable detail. The skeptic washed in the waters of modernism would say this is a dated relic, perceiving that insights the reader gains will threaten modernism's hegemony. I see universal validity here.
