This book had some beautiful photography but like most of the TFH series of books was somewhat generic in its content. The information could have applied to most any giant breed dog and seemed to be more entertaining than informative. Considering that the author is an actual breeder of Swiss Mountain Dogs, I had hoped for a more balanced overview of the breed.

Great book with lots of personal input by Mr. Barton. I was not sure what to expect when I got my pup other than what I saw on the internet and what the breeder told me. It was all pretty on target, but in this book, Mr. Barton introduces more subtle and intersting accounts of the characteristics of the breed and now I can see all this dveloping in my own Swissy. ...

As a prospective dog owner, looking for the perfect breed is difficult, but Mr. Barton's explanation of the GSMD and his high-quality photography easily convinced me that the GSMD was the right choice. If you have never heard of the GSMD, this is also a great way to learn of how the breed was saved from near extinction. What a loss that would have been! Easily readable and enjoyable, this book made my decision easy. Job well done.

I have never seen a book with such high quality
photography. As opposed to other books I have seen, this book really allows you to see the markings of the individual animal. As Swissies are tri-colored, this seems to me to be especially important.

I just purchased my third copy of this book. Once I loan my copy out to friends or family, it disappears! I'm not telling anyone else I have a new copy! So obviously it is a VERY interesting and informative book. I agree with one of the previous reviewers however. When will you be writing another book?!? Thanks for the information you provide without boring us with unnecessary details.

Color pictures are nice but the content of this book is pretty generic. The majority of the text could have been taken from a general dog book with a handful of Swissy-specific info sprinkled in. This book is not as good as "An Introduction to the GSMD."

I got this book when trying to find info on the breed. Did it help! It answers everything you might want to know. Great pictures and tons of info, good job Jim! Thanks to this book I now own and love my swissy

We purchased this book in anticipation of our Swissy's arrival in the next few months (Spring '99). The book includes all the information I spent the last few months researching! Training, selection, care, health, and even pulling are all covered with plenty of detail. I would reccomend this book to anyone looking to learn more about these dogs. Even better, the Sire of our puppy was one of the dogs shown in the book! If you need more information, the Discovery Channel's Animal Planet has a show called "Breed: All About It" that featured Swissy's in an episode (check TV listings).

This is a very informative book. From the history, selecting a breeder, feeding and training. It's a must have for any "swissy" owner. The photos are terrific and I can't think of a thing that Mr. Barton has left out!

If you are going to own or are thinking of owning this breed, read this book BEFORE doing so. Its very informative, complete, knowledgeable. It will give you all you need to know to make an informed decision on this breed.
