Celebrate Sketch Comedy,

I'm currently acting in a production of "Greater Tuna" for Magnolia Arts Center; so I'm literally memorizing this script! As I work with it and get farther into the project, I'm enjoying the different rhythms between the characters. The writing is often funny with many down-home jokes about small town people who take themselves very seriously. From the news reporter Arles Struvie to the sweetheart of the humane society, Petey Fisk, I find the jokes and concerns to work well, "I would like to ask each of you to take a minute to think about ducks. It's tough being a duck!" Short scenes and monologues are woven together that require lots of quick changes in performance. Going from the young rebel Stanley to his bratty cheerleading sister Charlene requires quite a bit of changing gears. Mostly this material is all for laughs, except for a few sweet moments with Petey near the end of the play. I had wondered if the material would work as well if you had 20 actors to play all the different parts; since much of the fun of the show is seeing how the same actors can embody such different characters. For all the actors out there who secretly harbor regrets at not being cast on "Saturday Night Live," this show helps to celebrate the joy of sketch comedy. I saw the road show of "A Greater Tuna Christmas" recently which took many of these characters and put them in different situations. "Greater Tuna" is a good script to pull out for local theatre groups who want audiences to leave with a smile on their face. Enjoy!

I worked backstage for this play when our company performed it. Absolutely hillarious with characters that will tickle you everyday.

I have both read and performed this play. It is absolutely hilarious and the characters in it are outrageous!
