Review

I lost my Evolution Faith when being taught by London University's Professor J.Z. Young, FRS, arguably the greatest Darwinian evolutionist of the 20th Century. I have since been waiting for a 21st Century genius to prove that the Darwinian Evolution Emperor has no clothes. Jonathan Sarfati is that genius as you can see from this his latest masterpiece. With an astonishing array of scientific references, Sarfati has demonstrated that he is far and away the better debater than Richard Dawkins. Read it, and re-read it! --Dr. Felix Konotey-Ahulu (a world authority on sickle cell anemia), Kwegyir Aggrey Distinguished Professor of Human Genetics, University of Cape Coast, Ghana, and Former Consultant Physician Genetic Counsellor, Cromwell Hospital, London

Any rational debate requires the honest presentation of both sides. But there exists a powerful, self-styled 'intellectual elite' [that] would have a debate wherein only one side was heard while the other side was either ignored or grossly misrepresented. ... In my opinion Sarfati's book beats Dawkins' book, point by point, on all issues. --John Sanford Ph.D., Courtesy Associate Professor, Dept. of Horticultural Sciences, Cornell University. (John is a pioneer of genetic engineering and inventor of the gene gun)

An excellent rebuttal to the best evolution has to offer. The reader should walk away with the understanding that evolutionary theory is a house of cards and its chief spokesmen are promoting poor, illogical, and false arguments against the only viable alternative: biblical creation. --Robert Carter, Ph.D. in Marine Biology and Genetics (University of Miami)

About the Author

Jonathan received his B.Sc. (hons) in Chemistry and his Ph.D. (Physical Chemistry) from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He has co-authored papers in mainstream scientific journals including one on high-temperature superconductors published in Nature when he was 22 years old. He has long been interested in apologetics, and was a co-founder of the Wellington Christian Apologetics Society (New Zealand). His first book Refuting Evolution was written to counter a teachers guidebook by the National Academy of Sciences (USA), Teaching about Evolution and the Nature of Science. It now has over 400,000 copies in print. He later wrote Refuting Evolution 2 and the highly acclaimed Refuting Compromise, both as responses to attacks on the biblical view of history, plus the booklet Mammoth: Riddle of the Ice Age. Jonathan is co-author of the updated Answers Book, 15 Reasons to Take Genesis as History and the booklet Why is there Death and Suffering? He works full-time for Creation Ministries International in Brisbane, Australia where he is a co-editor of Creation magazine and also writes and reviews articles for the in-depth, peer-reviewed Journal of Creation (formerly TJ), as well as being active in speaking ministry. Jonathan is also an accomplished chess player and is a former New Zealand Chess Champion, representing New Zealand in three Chess Olympiads (and drew with Boris Spassky, world champion 1969-1972). In 1988, the International Chess Federation awarded him the title of F.I.D.E. Master (FM). For the fun of it, he regularly accepts challenges from multiple players while he is blindfolded. He then plays from memory with up to 12 players simultaneously.

I enjoyed this book very much. I have read some of his previous books, including Refuting Evolution and Refuting Evolution 2. Overall, his arguments are consistent between the books and I find them logically sound. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a direct response to common arguments for evolution - such as those presented by Richards Dawkins as "The Greatest Show on Earth".

Now, on the the more detailed review of the book. I won't get too much into the specifics, as many other people have covered these in praise or hate. Instead, I'll touch on them and discuss my views on the book.

First off, I believe the author, Jonathan, is a rather honest individual. He states from the beginning that each of us base our interpretations of the world around us on our fundamental beliefs. He is clear and makes no apologies that his fundamental beliefs are based in The Bible. However, for someone such as myself, I find it refreshing that he defends his beliefs with science and logical arguments, as opposed to many Christians who says "Well, I believe - because!" before promptly avoiding any information that could stir doubt in their beliefs.

This is how I arrived here. As a person who enjoys science and a man who considers himself a man of reason, I could no longer ignore the raging, loud, violent arguments of people telling me Christianity is mindless and ignores science. I began to research, extensively, and based off of the same evidence presented to support evolution, I drew a conclusion similar to that of Jonathan - that evolution is nothing more than a semi-educated conjecture about an unprovable past, fundamentally based in a commitment to materialism.

This book is so good and informative, it is difficult to know where to start! To anyone who is genuinely open-minded about science and origins, and has heard the reasoning of Richard Dawkins, I say this book is a must read. I promise it won't likely disappoint (if the reader is open-minded, and not authority driven).

It becomes clear quite early that author Jonathan Sarfati is a match for Dawkins and his arguments, even though people may wrongfully think that Dawkins' evidences are virtually infallible. They are not. What impressed me throughout the book, is that Sarfati comes up with counter examples to many of the statements that Dawkins made. For example, where Dawkins alleges that molecular trees and morphology neatly matches in an evolutionary tree, Sarfati comes up with counter examples and shows how highly irresponsible and even inaccurate Dawkins' statements are (pp. 100/1 in original printing). Likewise, Dawkins alleges that flatworms left no fossil trace, in an argument trying to deal with the 'Cambrian Explosion'. Yet Sarfati provides an example or reference of a flatworm fossil from rocks just below those classified as Cambrian. Greatest Hoax is loaded with references which can easily be followed at the bottom of the pages, so this makes it easy to follow these example.

The book further starts off by de-muddying the waters, on important issues such as 'natural selection' and 'speciation'. Clearly most creationists have no problem with there being NS, they just don't ascribe all the creative powers to it, but rather view it as a conservative force in nature. Also, they certainly do not believe in 'fixity of species', as is often given the impression.

I have not completely finished this book yet, but it appears so far that Jonathan Sarfarti has done a good job doing what he said out to do. This was not to destroy evolution, or raise Creationism to a new level, but to refute Dawkin's book. He takes some shots at evolution, but the main goal of the book is to refute Dawkin's book point by point. He shows that Dawkin's wipes out all kinds of straw men that do not at all represent actual beliefs of Creationist scientists. Some of the straw men he uses are even listed on Creationist sites as arguments NOT to use because they are known to be either fallacious or worthless.

To refute Dawkin's, he presents other alternatives to what Dawkin's presented. He makes a lot of strong points that should be pondered. The book did not seem so much as a refutation of evolution as it is a refutation of someone who will not debate actual scientists, and writes books that seem to show why it is a good thing that he picks to fight those who either aren't scientists, or are out of their field. Why doesn't he debate actual Creation scientists? (Reading this book shows why. It isn't so much that evolution would lose, but that Dawkin's would have difficulty defending his position.) It is so much easier to play Don Quixote and kill the imaginary monsters. (In this case, knock down straw men.) There may not be (I don't think there is) a victory against evolution, or the proving of Creationism, but it does a good job of handling Dawkin's book.

You will read a whole lot of comments asking for evidence, saying they have evidence, etc. In this realm, there is no evidence. There are only interpretations. One see patterns, one sees pieces of a puzzle. Yet there may be no pattern, and there may be no puzzle.
