English Oceans Album Trailer

English Oceans, the 12th release by Athens, Georgia's Drive-By Truckers, is an elegantly balanced and deeply engaged new effort that finds the group refreshed and firing on all cylinders.

All but one of the collection's 13 new songs, written by singer-guitarists and co-founding members Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, were recorded during 13 days of sessions in August 2013 with ... Read more in Amazon's Drive-By Truckers Store

3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Do DBT Justice August 11, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Ok, so for a casual this is a good start, but really it doesn't do the group justice. They've never really had any "hits", but have more than enough quality tracks that aren't on this collection. Patterson Hood put this collection together for New West, who wanted a single disc worth of material, so it's not the groups fault so many key tracks are missing. This should have been a two disc collection in order to give newcomers a true taste of the finest moments the band has to offer. Tracks like "Goddamn Lonely Love", "72(This Highway's Mean)", "Space City", and "Guitar Man Upstairs" to name a few. So if you're just getting into DBT this is a decent starting point, though I would go with Southern Rock Opera, Dirty South, and or Decoration Day first. The band's hat trick.

5.0 out of 5 stars One greatest hits worth buying! August 2, 2011
By Lou
Format:Audio CD
Drive-By Truckers is one of the few musical bands that can't do anything wrong. This CD is proof. I will admit that buying their individual albums is better only because each follows a theme. But if you are going to just pick out songs here & there, this is a solid representation of what they've done and what they can still do.
Yes, a few songs are missing, but it's mostly personal preference. What's on here simply ROCKS! Tunes like "Let There Be Rock" and "Sink Hole" put an imprint on what this band is about. Hood, Cooley, and all the rest are talented, smart, and appeal to their growing fan base. If you've never listened (or heard of) to Drive-By Truckers before, this is a great starting point. And after you hear this, you'll be likely to explore some of their entire albums to see what makes them go.
It's a CD well worth owning.

4.0 out of 5 stars DBT always a Hit August 2, 2011
Format:Audio CD
DBT is an excellent, unique band who weave their stories throughout an album or show. Even with a great catalog, definitely not a "singles" band ... you need to hear a few tunes at a time to really get down into the dirty south. I've bought greatest hit releases many times to check out a band and hopefully some will be rewarded by doing the same here.

Their individual albums are far more interesting than a greatest hits could ever be. Besides, it's lame to pick out the one song that didn't make it on a Hits release out of so many. But still ... no Women Without Whiskey? Probably an attempt to balance out the albums and/or songwriters, but c'mon boys, go with your strength and there's nothing stronger than that gem. I'm going to put it on right now and get over it.

DBT is always in my rotation and I'll check them out anytime they hit So Cal. Still miss the triple guitar and songwriting trio, but times change and now Jason is giving it up with the 300 Unit. Enjoy the rock show and make sure Women Without Whiskey makes it onto YOUR mix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Worthy Survey of a Great Band November 2, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I don't want to get up the noses of the long term trucker fans, but personally, having heard five of their albums (SROpera, Brighter Than.., The Dirty South, Go Go Boots and Live in Austin Tx)I thought this was an excellent survey, and I'll tell you why. If you've come to the DBT late, as I did two to three years ago, you would have been forgiven for thinking the band was great in patches, particularly when they rocked out. I don't mean that the Shauna Tucker stuff et al is inferior, but rather that it doesn't fit with how I want this band to be i.e a great and unpretentious rock band. Personally I like it when Mike Cooley takes the helm. This came to me most clearly while watching DBT live in Sydney when they played a 2nd set after their interesting but largely ill-fated collaboration with Booker T. When the DBT rock out, there is no better rock band on the planet, and the tracks that run consecutively on this CD from 3-6 attest to that, which is what makes this survey a good one, it emphasises what I love about DBT, great stories, great guitars and awesome accents (Hey, I'm an aussie, give me some leverage on that one). Zip City is possibly the best country rock song I've ever heard.
This is a great way to get into the band.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a good mix of DBT songs! PASS on this November 1, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I have been a fan for years and consider this to be an unbalanced CD of DBT songs. There are tons of classics missing - I won't even try to list them. If you want to check out DBT I advise you buy "The Dirty South" or "Pizza Deliverence" to check them out. I gave this 3 stars only because they are good band and I support them, but I really would give this compilation 1 star. Not good at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars DBT Greatest Hits 1998-2009 October 25, 2012
By Matthew
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I'm really late getting on the DBT bandwagon. If I could be in any band in the world, this would be it. They mix country and southern rock in a real way, not some Nashville posers. Heart-on-the-sleeve, at times hilarious, great songwriting. I hope DBT stay together and continue to make this caliber of music for a long, long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Songs For Slim Led Me Here February 25, 2014
By Joe
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Slim Dunlap, lead guitarist for the Replacements had a stroke. A benefit disc was done. Hate This Town was done by Patterson Hood & the Downtown Ramblers. 4:02 minutes of heaven. Led me here. Not a bad place to be. They are playing Toads in New Haven CT in March. Got the night off and something to look forward to. See where Songs For Slim leads you!

We've all our own faves but for me this collection was just pretty good. If I were introducing someone to DBT, I'd most definitely put together a little different collection. But then again, DBT gets to choose, not me. Still, I love these guys and am eagerly awaiting their new release.

it's actually hard to put together a dbt compilation worth less than 5 stars, but they managed. there's still not a bad tune in the bunch. Read more

Love this one by the DBTs. I can listen to this one through and through. If it ever gets stuck in the player, I'll be ok with that. Buy it's that good.

Not sure why real fans need this and not sure how many outsiders will be drawn to it. Real fans would not have any reason to buy this CD, you already pretty much have these songs. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Truckers are the greatest band out there.
I really like this album. Although there are many DBT "greatest hits", this is a nice compilation of their songs. Also, IMHO Vinyl sounds so much better that digital.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the Truckers
Some of the best of their songs on this album. One of my personal favorites is Uncle Frank. Pretty good mix of the old and new. Only thing missing is a song off of Go Go Boots.

1.0 out of 5 stars drive by truckers--greatest hits-2009
An absolute piece of musical garbage, poorly mastered, poorly played, no real guitarist in that band...any garage band could play that stuff. CD is not worth one dollar.
