Kylie: Reissued and Remixed,
By Tom Blake (Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Greatest Hits 87-97 (Audio CD)
Kylie Minogue.....it is strange to think that she started out as the "I Should Be So Lucky" teen queen that grew into the "Feel The Fever" pop icon she is today. This collection was released over 10 years ago, but since Kylie's worldwide popularity as grown since the release of 2000's LIGHT YEARS and 2001's FEVER, PWL wanted to cash in again I guess. This collection represents the best of late 1980's and early 1990's dance music produced by the Stock/Aitken/Waterman production team. As with many a pop artist Kylie eventually grew out of touch with the S/A/W team and left for the trendy DeConstruction dance label in 1993. The stand-out tracks from the 1980's include her first world-wide hit in 1987, the joyous "I Should Be So Lucky", "Locomotion", and "Got To Be Certain" from 1988's KYLIE. The sweet "Hand On Your Heart", "Wouldn't Change A Thing", and "Never Too Late" from 1989's ENJOY YOURSELF album. As the Kylie entered the 1990's she released four singles that have defined her career through it's many up and downs. The first being her undying dance classic "Better The Devil You Know" which marked the first appearence of "Sex Kylie" with the song's stylish video clip. The Second being the funky "Step Back In Time" with its heart stuck in that 1970's groove. The third single from 1990's classic RHYTHM OF LOVE being the epic remix of "What Do I Have To Do?". And the last offical single being the DNA remix of "Shocked" which improves on the original while keeping some of the original elements. By 1991, Kylie was growing out of synch with S/A/W and PWL records and it is reflected in 1991's LET'S GET TO IT. The first single the urban/jazzy "Word Is Out" still holds up really well considering it age. The ballad with Keith Washington "If You Were With Me Now" is in my opinon Kylie's best effort of balladery during the PWL years. "Give Me Just A Little More Time" and "Finer Feelings" with the latter being remixed with future collaborators the Brothers In Rhythm, make the song a memborable fan favorite giving the song a more middle-eastern style flair. All-in-all, this collection is a good reminder of what made Kylie..."Kylie". Each song is remastered and sounds as good or better than it did 10 years ago. I would also recomend the 2000 release HITS +, which highlights Kylie's "indie" period during the DeConstruction years (1994-1998). Also, pick up 2000's LIGHT YEARS and 2001's FEVER in which Kylie returns to the sound that made her famous...Dance Pop. And more thing, Kylie is about to release her ninth studio album BODY LANGUAGE, with the first single being the hypnotic "Slow". The Album will be released in the US in early February 2004.

Classic Kylie,

This is an excellent compilation if you are interested in discovering Kylie's early work before she became a superstar with hits like 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' and 'Slow'.
This covers Kylie's first ten years of making pop music, and if you think she does it well now, her early stuff is equally good. This two-disc compilation features classics like 'I Should Be So Lucky', 'Better the Devil You Know', 'Shocked', 'What Do I Have To Do?', 'Step Back In Time' and her covers of 'Celebration', 'The Locomotion' and 'Give Me A Little More Time'. It also features Kylie's underrated material for the Deconstruction label, including 'Confide In Me' and 'Did It Again'; songs considered more avant-garde for Kylie, yet they are perfect pop masterpieces with slightly more edge than we would expect from Kylie. There are also a number of bonus remixes, making this a generous compilation. I agree with Thunderhexed that although there is 'Ultimate Kylie' out there, this collection is equally listenable. 'Ultimate Kylie' only gives a fair sampling of Kylie's early work while focusing more on her post-2000 career. Kylie has amassed an impressive body of work, and I highly recommend this collection. In fact, I consider it one of Kylie's essential CDs.

I'm a big Kylie fan and this CD is my favourite. Almost all songs on CD1 is great and CD2 is good but some of the remixes are sadly not that good. Buy this now and enjoy.

I remember ver distinctly back in the day when Kylie's locomotion was all the rage on the radio. For my birthday my mother bought me Kylie's first album on cassette which I still have to this day. When her second cd, "Enjoy Yourself" was released, i picked it up, after that, Kylie was not heard from again in the U.S. It wasn't until the release of her "Fever" cd that I had thought anything about her. Upon hearing the bonus track "Butterfly", I knew there was much more to be learned. While in the cd store one day I came across this greatest hits cd, so I picked it up. It sparked a whole new love affair with Kylie. Within a period of about 6 months I ordered every album she released in the UK and Australia, every remix cd available, and even found the companion dvd to this greatest hits package. Kylie has DEFINATELY pushed Madonna out of the limelight for me. Kylie's music is just as pure and fun as her voice is smooth. If you can find the companion dvd to the greatest hits disc it's WELL worth it. It includes rare interviews, alternate video versions, behind the scenes video shoots(with a cameo by sister Danni) as well as a wonderful photo slide show that plays along to an instrumental verison of "Turn It Into Love", which, available on her debut disc, was only a big hit in Japan, other than my bedroom. Along came the Ultimate Kylie cd and dvd, which, of course I purchased, but I still find myself going back to this compilation for some classic Kylie. YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!! The remix bonus disc is awesome too, Hi-lights on that disc are the Movers n Shakers mixes of Better the Devil You know and What Do I have to DO..sure , peak time, club floor fillers modernized for today!

This must be destiny, this collection was released at my birthday =)I found Kylie Minogue just one year ago, but since then I've hardly listened anything else. I have all albums, but GH includes some songs I didn't have. And it includes all best songs. And of course, if you don't want to bring all albums when going to the party, you can just pick this one. 'Cause that's what this is, party music. We just celebrated my birthday, and this album "threw us to the ceiling". It's great fun, but if you don't like late 80's music, don't buy this.

Should Be Titled: "What America Missed Out On",
By Aaron (Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews

Yeah, we got a taste of Kylie back in the late 80's when she scored three top 40 hits, but after the US failure of "Enjoy Yourself", she stayed overseas where her career was booming. In the UK alone Kylie has scored nearly 30 top 10 hits which is mind boggling and this collection captures most of them *of course with the exception of the hits from "Fever", "Light Years" and "Body Language."* I'm a big Britney fan, but Britney has nothing on Kylie. She's done many different types of music. From her late 80's and early 90's SAW dance pop and her great cover songs, to her experimental 90's pop and later disco/techno music, she's the princess of pop. "I Should Be So Lucky", "Locomotion" and "Got To Be Certain" started it all and are still some of her best songs. They're poppy and sweet as heck, but some of the best ear candy ever recorded. "Better the Devil You Know" and "Step Back In Time" are classic dance songs and were a hint into things to come. Ballads like "Especially For You", "Tears On My Pillow" and "Say the Word" are beautiful *although Kylie is suited better for the dance music.* Later songs like "Breathe" and "Did It Again" are good, but I enjoy her earlier music better. For any American Kylie fan that missed out on all of this, this album is an essential! One of the best and most complete collections of pop music you can buy. Yeah, "Fever" was great and got her attention in the states again, but there was a lot more before that. ;)

Especially for You,

Kylie Minogue's first decade of pop was fulfilled in 1997 so it was time for collection. Without a doubt she is at least a princess of pop music. The major 80's hits like "I Should Be So Lucky", "Got to Be Certain", "The Loco-Motion", "Never Too Late", "Hand on Heart" make sure that your hunger of pop music will find somethin' that you won't starve. In 80's Kylie's music and her voice was quite innocent, like a little girl's innocence. She made also a duet with Jason Donovan "Especially for You" which was a major hit and I still think that it is the best duet I have ever heard. After those two 80's album, Kylie changed her style...now she was more "naughtier" and the songs like "Better the Devil You Know", "Shocked", "Word Is Out" were released. They weren't as big hits as the earlier ones but they became popular for live songs. Also a duet with Keith Washington "If You Were With Me Now" was released. It was also a big hit. Kylie's style changed again with "Kylie Minogue" and "Impossible Princess" albums. They were now more adult pop music than before...some of them are still great songs for her concerts: "Confide in Me", "Put Yourself in My Place", "Did It Again", and "Breathe". There's also three great rare tracks "Say The Word - I'll Be There", "Made in Heaven", and "Where in the World".
Stars: Especially for You, Got to Be Certain, Tears on My Pillow, Step Back in Time, I Should Be So Lucky

At first, I hesistated to buy this album, but I didn't regret buying it! Being a fan of Kylie's current music, I thought I would never appreciate this one! It's like taking a trip down memory lane, hearing all the cheesy pop ditties Kylie sang to earn herself a place in the pop world. These songs are reminiscent of Madonna's early work, but Kylie's songs are much more shallow, fun, light. It even includes a 2nd cd of her work with Deconstruction, bREATHE, dID it AGAIN, CONFIDE IN ME and PUT YOURSELF IN MY PLACE showcases Kylie at her creative best! It also includes remixes of her past hits perhaps to show the relevance of Kylie's early work in the new millenium in an ever-changing pop landscape. it also has a 28-page booklet complete with beautiful pictures, informative liner notes on each single release (and all the covers of the singles even!)and a brief story of how Kylie's musical journey started! The music stands for itself alone--it's fun, happy, it's vintage kylie! I wouldn't change a thing!

If you are a lover of Dance-Pop and or Euro-Dance with pleasant vocals, you will love this CD. The tracks are infectous and the remixes are worthy. I also recommend Rozalla-"Look No Further", Adeva-"Love or Lust", Stacey Q-"Nights Like This", & Amanda Lear-"Alter Ego."

this cd starts off with the innocent and cute "i should be so lucky" and as it continues the advancement of kylie and her style and identity become clear.it features all of her early hits and a couple of rare highlights ("made in heaven" with all of it's comparisons to belinda carlisle's hit "heaven is a place on earth" and the beautiful mid-tempo song "say the word - i'll be there"). Of course the highlights are the singles including the DNA mix of "shocked", the duet with ex Jason "especially for you" which can be too soppy to bear on occasion, "give me just a little more time", "did it again" and "confide in me" are my personal favourites. the remixes are worthwhile but don't buy the CD just for them! |
